  • A major topic in this book is the study of propagation and scattering of waves by randomly distributed particles. We first consider scattering by a single particle. This chapter and the next discuss and derive the scattering characteristics of a single particle. Both exact and solutions are studied. Scattering by a single ...

  • This is the first in a series of papers in which we initiate the study of very rough solutions to the initial value problem for the Einstein-vacuum equations expressed relative to wave coordinates. By very rough we mean solutions which cannot be constructed by the classical techniques of energy estimates and Sobolev inequalities. Following [Kl-Ro] we develop new analytic methods based on Strichartz-type inequalities which result in a gain of half a derivative relative to the classical result. ...

  • Global warming is the rising average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Since the early 20th century, Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C, with about two thirds of the increase occurring since 1980. Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain that most of it is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels.

  • This volume, derived from the Handbook of Engineering Electromagnetics (2004), is intended as a desk reference for the fundamentals of engineering electromagnetics. Because electromagnetics provides the underpinnings for many technological fields such as wireless communications, fiber optics, microwave engineering, radar, electromagnetic compatibility, material science, and biomedicine, there is a great deal of interest and need for training in the concepts of engineering electromagnetics.

  • ROTHE TIME-DISCRETIZATION METHOD APPLIED TO A QUASILINEAR WAVE EQUATION SUBJECT TO INTEGRAL CONDITIONS ABDELFATAH BOUZIANI AND NABIL MERAZGA Received 27 January 2004 and in revised form 12 February 2004 This paper presents a well-posedness result for an initial-boundary value problem with only integral conditions over the spatial domain for a one-dimensional quasilinear wave equation. The solution and some of its properties are obtained by means of a suitable application of the Rothe time-discretization method. 1.

  • According to Pierce-Eislen about 94% of the new construction is market rate while the remaining 6% is partially or fully affordable housing. Of the 10,217 units proposed, nearly 90% are market rate, 4% are mixed market rate and affordable and nearly 7% are fully affordable communities. Vacancy rates from county to county vary widely depending mostly on supply added to the market. Boulder/Broomfield reports vacancy at only 2.9% while Douglas and Jefferson Counties, also with limited new supply, reported vacancy rates of 4.1% and 3,7% respectively.

KHARIBEGASHVILI Received 20 October 2004 For wave equations with power nonlinearity we investigate the problem of the existence or nonexistence of global solutions of the Cauchy characteristic problem in the light cone of the future. 1. Statement of the problem Consider a nonlinear wave equation of the type u := ∂2 u − ∆u = f (u) + F, ∂t 2 (1.1) where f and F are the given real functions; note that f is a nonlinear and u is an unknown real...

  • Chemical reactions take place due to the redistribution of electron density among the reacting partners. Focusing on changes in electron density, which accompany the breaking and forming of chemical bonds, instead of the changes in the wave function accompanying them, allows us to use the ‘‘classical’’ three-dimensional language. Conceptual density functional theory (DFT) quantifies the possible responses of the system to various changes in density.
