“The highest-performing people I know are those who have installed the best
tricks in their lives.”—David Allen, productivity guru 1
Contrary to the popular misuse of the term to denote a computer criminal, a
hacker is someone who solves a problem in a clever or non-obvious way. A
lifehacker uses workarounds and shortcuts to overcome everyday difficulties
of the modern worker: an interrupt-driven existence of too much to do and too
many distractions to keep you from doing it.
The new economy moves at a pace never seen before. The new
economy is a knowledge economy based on brainpower, ideas
and entrepreneurism. Technology is the driver of the new
economy, and human capital is its fuel. The knowledge
economy is people-centric. Our economy has evolved from
manufacturing-intensive to labor-extensive. Fundamental to
success in the new economy is how companies obtain, train and
retain knowledge workers. The knowledge enterprise industry
is over $2.2 trillion. We expect the online component to grow
from $9.4 billion to $53.3 billion by 2003, a 54% CAGR.
Apple’s worker empowerment program reached a major milestone as the one-
millionth participant completed training this year. Through this program, workers
learn about our Code of Conduct, their rights as workers, occupational health and
safety standards, and more.
We expanded Apple’s Supplier Employee Education and Development (SEED)
program to all final assembly facilities. This program offers workers the opportu-
nity to take free classes on a range of subjects including finance, computer
skills, and English.
Mary Kay is the world leader in direct-sales cosmetics, with revenue of
more than $1.8 billion from wholesale transactions in 2004. Based in a
stunning 13-story, 790,000 square foot corporate headquarters in north
Dallas, Texas, the company manages its international operations with
an increasing reliance on mobile communications. Workers throughout
the company now use smartphones and pocket PCs for wireless e-mail,
calendaring, and web access. The company found that spotty cellular
coverage inside the building was impeding productivity.
For example, despite a lack of prenatal care that parallels that of African-Americans, Latina
mothers are far less likely to deliver low birth-weight babies with medical complications. Researchers
hypothesize that this is because of healthy behaviors (avoidance of alcohol, non-smoking, high
consumption of fruits and vegetables) that are more common in immigrant Latino cultures.
Researchers can pinpoint health disparities among communities, but they are also beginning
to recognize the wealth of healthy traditions that other cultures have to offer.
