Large vocabulary speech recognition systems fail to recognize words beyond their vocabulary, many of which are information rich terms, like named entities or foreign words. Hybrid word/sub-word systems solve this problem by adding sub-word units to large vocabulary word based systems; new words can then be represented by combinations of subword units. Previous work heuristically created the sub-word lexicon from phonetic representations of text using simple statistics to select common phone sequences. ...
Prior to this book, the targeted audience for my work has always been classroom students. The template for the textbooks included detailed, step-by-step instructions. When I was asked to contribute to the Beyond the Manual series, I was excited about the opportunity to present the information in a new format, skipping over the obvious and basic steps and addressing only that which the end user needs to know to learn what’s new and how to be proficient. I am grateful to Apress for giving me this opportunity. It was great working with the Apress team....
This paper presents an extensive evaluation of five different alignments and investigates their impact on the corresponding MT system output. We introduce new measures for intrinsic evaluations and examine the distribution of phrases and untranslated words during decoding to identify which characteristics of different alignments affect translation. We show that precision-oriented alignments yield better MT output (translating more words and using longer phrases) than recalloriented alignments. ...
Parallel corpora are made by human beings. However, as an MT system is an aggregation of state-of-the-art NLP technologies without any intervention of human beings, it is unavoidable that quite a few sentence pairs are beyond its analysis and that will therefore not contribute to the system. Furthermore, they in turn may act against our objectives to make the overall performance worse. Possible unfavorable items are n : m mapping objects, such as paraphrases, non-literal translations, and multiword expressions.
In this paper we present a proposal to extend WordNet-like lexical databases by adding phrasets, i.e. sets of free combinations of words which are recurrently used to express a concept (let's call them recurrent free phrases). Phrasets are a useful source of information for different NLP tasks, and particularly in a multilingual environment to manage lexical gaps. Two experiments are presented to check the possibility of acquiring recurrent free phrases from dictionaries and corpora.

Microsoft Office 2007 is the latest-and-greatest version of a long line of versions, starting (not surprisingly) with Version 1. Not that this is
the 2,007th version. Somewhere along the way Microsoft switched from using sequential numbers for versions to using years. publishing industry helped her establish a good foundation for
developing content for instructional use. Connie became interested
in technology when the Radio Shack TRS80 was introduced, and that’s when she
began writing her own material and training others to use computers.

"Hope went before them, and the world was wide."
Such was the spirit in which the exploration of the world was accomplished. It was the inspiration that carried
men of old far beyond the sunrise into those magic and silent seas whereon no boat had ever sailed. It is the
incentive of those to-day with the wander-thirst in their souls, who travel and suffer in the travelling, though
there are fewer prizes left to win. But
"The reward is in the doing, And the rapture of pursuing Is the prize."
