  • Several years ago, I was invited to write a review surveying the recent theoretical work on consciousness by authors in several fields, ranging from quantum physics and chemistry through neuroscience and psychology to philosophy and literature. A swift survey of the good new books lined up on top of my book- shelf (it numbers 78, today, January 28, 2004, and those are just the books) persuaded me that I should beg off the job. It has been a tumultuous decade, so rambunctious that several people are writing books just about the tumult.

  • To be truly productive with Linux, you need to thoroughly master shells and the command line. Until now, you had to buy two books to gain that mastery: a tutorial on fundamental Linux concepts and techniques, plus a separate reference. Now, there’s a far better solution. • The late 1990s brought us the revolution of the Internet. After 15 years of moving from a serverbased model of computing to a client/server-based model, the pendulum swung back heavily toward the server with the rapid growth of Web pages, HTML, and server-based applications. There was much to like about Web applications. Designers liked them because they had lots of great ways to apply nice-looking style sheets and layouts. Companies liked them because they did away with all the expensive and risky aspects of deploying client applications.

  • And thus White Rabbit perfectly described the plight of the modern worker. Do you feel like him at times: always running here and there, never at ease, stomach in knots, frequently late? “You’re going to be late for your own funeral!” Ever had a coworker, family member, or friend toss that one at you? “But someday,” you think, “this will be different. I’ll be on time for appointments and with reports. I’ll get enough sleep and eat three squares a day. Everyone will be so impressed with my efficiency—my sparkling office and clear desk.

  • This morning I awoke, and behold the Norman was lying alongside a wharf at Capetown. I had expected it, and yet it was a shock. In this breathless age ten days out of sight of land is enough to make you a merman: I looked with pleased curiosity at the grass and the horses. After the surprise of being ashore again, the first thing to notice was the air. It was as clear--but there is nothing else in existence clear enough with which to compare it. You felt that all your life hitherto you had been breathing mud and looking out on the world through...

  • We had attended a party at Diamond Head; and after dinner, comfortable on hikiee and easy-chairs on the lanai, we fell to talking about the legends and superstitions of the ancient Hawaiians. There were a number of old-timers there, several with a mixture of Hawaiian and American blood, and we were the only malihinis-happy to be there, and happy to listen. Most Hawaiian legends are rather childish, though often amusing; but many of their superstitions are grim and sinister-and they are not confined to ancient Hawaiians, either.

In fact, I always thought it cruel that Herb put the diet foods in the middle of one of the aisles, because if you really needed them, you probably wouldn’t be able to fit in to get them. But that’s not why I was there on that Monday.

  • An honest heart is an open heart. If we are dishonest in any way with ourselves or with others, it means we are in hiding. There is a wall, a barrier behind which we conceal something of ourselves. Subtle tension will be our companion, and while most of us learn to live with it, it drains our energy and tightens our muscles. On the other hand don't be too honest with others - feel their pulse - sometimes others are not ready to hear what's in your heart. But know that when you are honest you will experience a level of inner relaxation that you had...

  • It was a really hot summer’s day many years ago. I was on my way to pick up two items at the grocery store. In those days, I was a frequent visitor to the supermarket because there never seemed to be enough money for a whole week’s food-shopping at once. You see, my young wife, after a tragic battle with cancer, had died just a few months earlier. There was no insurance -- just many expenses and a mountain of bills.

  • My memories of food at school are many, starting with cafeteria lunch provided after we presented our green lunch token and without discussion of choices or options. Everyone had a lunch token, so no one knew that there was a free or reduced-price lunch and no one went off campus for lunch unless you lived in the neighborhood. Bigger or maybe hungrier students got larger portions. A few students brought lunch in cool lunch boxes, and we envied what was assumed to be a better lunch.

At present, it would be fair to say that the Indian mutual fund industry is living in interesting times. It remains to be seen how positively that can be interpreted.
