  • A book such as this would not have been written twenty years ago.An awareness of men as gendered is fairly new in health and social welfare. It took some years after the early development of social scientific interest in the social construction of masculinity for academics and practitioners to show an interest in practical engagement with men as gendered – that is, in engaging with men in such a way as to recognise how their identities and conduct are shaped by the way they are raised as men.

  • A WELL-KNOWN New York millionaire gave it as his opinion not long ago that any young man possessing a good constitution and a fair degree of intelligence might acquire riches. The statement was criticised--literally picked to pieces--and finally adjudged as being extravagant. The figures then came out, gathered by a careful statistician, that of the young men in business in New York City, sixty per cent, were earning less than $1,000 per year, only twenty per cent, had an income of $2,000, and barely five per cent, commanded salaries in excess of the latter figure.

  • Although the studies differ in population coverage, sample design, method and periodicity of measurement, use of proxies, and treatment of nonresponse and missing data, the authors conclude that most analyses using data from the post- 1980 period show declines in the percentage with moderate disability and IADL disability. These declines have been shown to vary by gender (18, 47) and level of education (18); and they also differ between the young-old and the old-old (19). Generally, there is more improvement in less-severe disability....

  • Young men aged 15–24 die at rates far higher than their female counterparts, and at rates higher than men of any other age group. Worldwide, the leading causes of death for young men aged 15–24 are traffic accidents and homicide—both directly related to how boys and men are socialized. In much of Latin America, the Caribbean and parts of sub-Saharan Africa, the leading cause of early death far and away is homicide.

  • However, engineering freshmen are less interested in what was or what is than they are in what will be. Young men and women exploring engineering as a career are excited about the future—their future—and about the engineering challenges 10 to 20 years from now when they are in the spring and summer of their careers. In the words of the four-time Stanley Cup winner and Hockey Hall of Fame member Wayne Gretzky, I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it’s been.

  • Throughout its history, the Army has been manpower-intensive in most of its systems. The combination of demographic changes (fewer young men), changed battlefield scenarios, and advanced technologies in improved robotics, computers, and artificial intelligence (AI) suggests both a need and an opportunity to multiply the effectiveness of Army personnel.

  • I’ve always believed that college basketball is about the players, so to me, 100 years of Carolina Basketball should celebrate the young men who have worked so hard to represent the University of North Carolina. Without them, we wouldn’t need coaches like me. When I look back at the history of Carolina Basketball, I think first about the players. The way I think about them might surprise you. Our players have given me so many memorable experiences. It’s those interactions on and off the court—even more than the wins or the championships—which I have treasured....

  • I’m always amazed where I find ideas and support for book projects, invariably in the oddest of places. Who’d have thought that the very earnest young man I interviewed for The 80% Minority five years ago from Mountain Equipment Co-Op would become a crucial member of my company’s team, let alone become my talented co-author. Sean’s retail expertise, but more importantly, his innate understanding of women consumers never ceases to amaze me. He teaches me every day.

  • This book is the result of twelve years' experience in teaching university students to write special feature articles for newspapers and popular magazines. By applying the methods outlined in the following pages, young men and women have been able to prepare articles that have been accepted by many newspaper and magazine editors. The success that these students have achieved leads the author to believe that others who desire to write special articles may be aided by the suggestions given in this book.

  • Exactly how schooling affects young women’s ‘autonomy’, especially with respect to her fertility and the life-chances of her children, is a contested issue. We draw on semi-structured interviews with young married women with at least one child under the age of six, in urban and rural areas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, north India, to elaborate differences in attitudes and experiences in early married life between young married women with at least eight years of schooling and those with little or no formal schooling.

  • The fifth part of a century almost has sped with the flight of time since the outbreak of the Slaveholder's Rebellion against the United States. The young men of to-day were then babes in their cradles, or, if more than that, too young to be appalled by the terror of the times. Those now graduating from our schools of learning to be teachers of youth and leaders of public thought, if they are ever prepared to teach the history of the war for the Union so as to render adequate honor to its martyrs and heroes, and at the same time impress the obvious moral...

  • This increased level of risk among young men is not confined to driving. The WHO (1999) and (2002) report that men are also more likely to die from falls, drowning, poisoning and a range of other events. Only in the case of deaths in fires are women slightly more over-represented than men. The report also notes that injury and fatality rates are higher among men for every type of road injury victim in several developing countries. In Kampala, Uganda, for example, males outnumbered females by between 2 and 7 to 1 among injured vehicle drivers, passengers and pedestrians. In the...

  • In all regions, knowledge of any method of contraception is high among young women and nearly universal among young men. However, knowledge of multiple methods is lower among young women and men in sub-Saharan Africa than their counterparts in other regions. Current use of modern contraception among married youth is lowest in sub-Saharan Africa. Overall, although sexually active, unmarried young women are more likely to use modern contraceptive methods, they also have higher levels of unmet need for contraception compared to currently married young women.

  • Infections Hepatitis is the most common preceding infection, and posthepatitis marrow failure accounts for about 5% of etiologies in most series. Patients are usually young men who have recovered from a bout of liver inflammation 1 to 2 months earlier; the subsequent pancytopenia is very severe. The hepatitis is seronegative (non-A, non-B, non-C, non-G) and possibly due to a novel, as yet undiscovered, virus. Fulminant liver failure in childhood also follows seronegative hepatitis, and marrow failure occurs at a high rate in these patients.

  • Amongst the arguments raised against cloning has been concern that reproductive cloning would lessen the respect for individuals because of the feeling that they could easily be replaced. 23 Every form of reproductive technology raises some question of human values, dignity, worth and juridical rights, some linked to the notion that the person should not be used as a mere mechanical instrument, and that every human individual is a non-repeatable being.

  • Most HIV-infected women and men had not discussed their fertility desires and intentions with a health care provider because of anticipated negative reactions. Women tended to see doctors and nurses as handling matters related to care and treatment, with the psychosocial aspects being handled by counsellors. Some women who had discussed reproduction with a health care provider found providers to be supportive of their reproductive choice. Others encountered providers who expressed negative attitudes towards HIV-infected women becoming pregnant.

  • Since the early 1980s, much time and effort has been expended in trying to understand the relative contributions of different social factors in mortality decline (especially declines in infant and child mortality) and in reductions in fertility. In these debates, the schooling level (number of years attended) of a young mother has often been portrayed as the single most powerful correlate of reductions in the infant and child mortality of her children, and (to a lesser but still very considerable degree) to reduction in her completed family size.
