Reading to oneself is a modern activities which was almost unknown to the scholar of the classical and medieval words, while during the century the term “reading” undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only reading in the nineteenth century dia silent reading become commonplace. One should be wary, however, of assuming that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud was a distraction to others. Examinations of factors related to the historical development of silent reading have revealed that it became the usual mode of reading for most adults mainly because the tasks themselves change in character. The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number os readers. As a number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less comon, so came the flourishing of reading as a private Trang 4
- activity in such public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers. Toward the end of the century, there was still considerable argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully and over whether the reading of materials such as newspapers was in some way metally eakening. Inneed, this argument remain with us still in education. However, whatever its virtues, the old share literacy culture has gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the other hand and by books and preodicals for a specialized readership on the other: By the end of nineteenth cetury, students were being recommended to adop attitudes to books and to use reading skills which were inappropriate, if not impossible, for oral reader. The social, cultural and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what the term “reading” implied. Question 28: Reading aloud was more common in the medieval world because: A. people relied on reading for entertainment. B. silent reading had not been discovered. The inappropriate reading skills B. the sepecialized readership C. the diversity of reading materials D. the printed mass media Question33: Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage? Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 35 to 42. Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time. If corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learn all the other things they learn to do without being taught to talk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not. Trang 6
- If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams, and marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must someday learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know. Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it. Question 35: What does the author think is the best way for children to learn things? A. By listening to explanations from skilled people. B. By making mistakes and having them corrected. C. By asking a great many questions. D. By copying what other people do.
