  3. Most Americans agree that the workplace and the home are very different from the way they were thirty years ago. The world of work is no longer a man's world. Between 1970 and 1995, the percentage of women who worked outside the home went from 50 percent to 76 percent. In the year 2000, of the more than 55 million married couples in the United States, 10.5 million women were making more than their husbands, and 2 million men were stay-at-home dads. Author, husband, and father Mark Wertman writes about being a stay-at-home dad in his book True Confessions of a Real Mr Mom. His story will help others who are learning how to live with the changing gender roles in our society. Mark and his wife, Georgenes, were a two-income couple, but things changed when their first baby was born. Georgenes wanted to continue her work as a lawyer, but someone needed to stay home to take care of the baby. Georgenes had the higher paying job, so she became the provider. Mark stayed home to raise the children. In his book, he tells many stories about his role in the family. At first, it was difficult to change roles. The Wertman kids often went to Mark first to talk about their problems. Georgenes was jealous of the time the children spent with their father. Mark had some hard times too. People often asked him, "When are you going to get a real job?" Even in the 21st century, society respects the role of the provider more than the role of child raiser. Mark found out all about it. Mark and Georgenes learned that it was very important to talk about their problems. In the beginning, Mark thought Georgenes had the easy job, and Georgenes thought that Mark had it easy. Later they talked it over and discovered that both jobs were difficult and rewarding. Georgenes and Mark agree that talking things over and making decisions together help their relationship. The Wertmans are now happy with the results of their decision. Their children are ready for a world where men and women can choose their roles. Wertman's book is entertaining and educational, especially for couples who want to switch roles. Mark Wertman says: "We are society. We make the changes one by one. People have to decide on what's best for them and their families". Question 30: Why is the workplace no longer a man's world? A. Because more women are jealous. B. Because men are less and less strong. C. Because fewer men are stay-at-home dads. D. Because more women are in the workplace. Question 31: Mark Wertman's book is about _______. A. his writing job B. his first baby and his wife's job C. his wife's career D. his life as a stay-at-home dad Question 32: How do the Wertmans work out their problems? A. They make their jobs easier. B. They talk and make decisions together. C. They agree to change jobs. D. They help their children study at home. Question 33: The phrase "talked it over" in paragraph 5 mostly means _______. A. found it easy B. reached a conclusion C. said it again and again D. discussed the problem Question 34: Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. More and more men in the US prefer to stay at home to raise children. B. The breadwinner of the family is likely to be more respected. C. Neither Mark nor Georgenes was satisfied at first. D. Wertman's book is entertaining and useful for young couples. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. With 13,000 floral species and over 15,000 faunal species, three newly discovered big animal species, and a ratio of country/world species of 6.3%, Vietnam has enormous tourism - particularly ecotourism - potential. In fact, since 1986, when Renovation Reforms began the shift from a centrally planned to a socialist-oriented market, or multi-sectoral economy, tourism has been a sector of primary concern to the government. In May 1995, the prime minister of Vietnam approved a master plan of tourism development for the period 1995 - 2010. In February 1999, the state decree on tourism was part of the socio-economic development strategy for the period 2001 - 2010 approved at the IX National Congress of the Party: "Tourism development has become a spearhead economic industry indeed. It is Trang 3/5
  4. necessary to improve the quality and effectiveness of tourism activities, bringing into full play the natural conditions, and cultural and historical tradition to meet the domestic and international demand for tourism and to catch up with tourism development in the region" (Document of the IX National Congress 2001). Tourism has so far brought great benefits to the economy, but it has also contributed to environmental degradation, especially biodiversity deterioration. Thus, the concept of "sustainable development" - development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs - must be factored into tourism development. This consideration is reflected in the term "ecotourism," which is referred to variously as ecological or environment tourism, nature or green tourism, sustainable or responsible tourism. Ecotourism involves travel to relatively undisturbed natural areas with the specific object of studying, admiring and enjoying scenery, plants and animals as well as any cultural features found in these areas. It is distinguished from mass or resort tourism by its lower impact on the environment, lower infrastructure requirements, and its role in educating tourists about natural environments and cultural values. Fully aware of its significance, the government of Vietnam has prioritized ecotourism in its strategy for tourism development to ensure both sustainability and economic benefits.
