Another critical factor that plays a part in susceptibility to colds is age. A study done by the University of Michigan School of Public Health revealed particulars that seem to hold true for the general population. Infants are the most cold-ridden group, averaging more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to age three. After the age of three, girls are more susceptible than boys, and teenage girls average three colds a year to boys’ two. The general incidence of colds continues to decline into maturity. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds annually. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections, because people in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay having children until their thirties and forties experience the same sudden increase in cold infections. The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the highest end. Lower income in general forces people to live in more cramped quarters than those typically occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also adversely influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to colds is not yet clearly established, but an inadequate diet is suspected of lowering resistance in general. Question 5: The paragraph that precedes this passage most probably deals with ______. A. minor diseases other than colds. B. methods of preventing colds among elderly people. It contradicts the results of earlier studies in the field. C. Its results apparently are relevant for the population as a whole. D. It contains many inconsistencies. Trang 1/4 Mã đề thi 307
- Question 8: According to the passage, which of the following groups of people is most likely to catch colds? A. teenage boys B. elderly women C. young girls D. infant boys Question 9: There is information in the second paragraph of the passage to support which of the following conclusions? A. People who don’t have children are more susceptible to colds than those who do. B. People who live in a cold climate have more colds than those who live in a warm one. C. Men are more susceptible to colds than women. D. Children infect their parents with colds. Question 10: The author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph of the passage is to A. explain how cold viruses are transmitted. B. discuss the distribution of income among the people in the study. C. prove that a poor diet causes colds. D. discuss the relationship between income and frequency of colds. Question 11: The author’s tone in this passage could best be described as________ A. highly critical. B. tentative but interested. C. neutral and objective. D. humorous. Read the following passage and then choose the most suitable word or phrase for each space from 12 to 16. Music is universal - it is produced by all cultures. Some scientists believe that music came before speech and arose as a development of mating calls. In fact, there is one theory that the (12)______ languages were chanted or sung, rather than spoken. Indeed, in some cultures, music is a form of (13)______ history. The Aboriginal Australians, for example, use music as a means to pass on stories of the land and spirits to the next generation. New evidence suggests that music does not just satisfy the feel - good factor but it is also good for the brain. A study of intellectually (14)______ children showed that they could recall more information after it was given to them in a song than after it was read to them as a story. Researchers also report that people (15)______ better on a standard intelligence test after listening to Mozart. The so-called “Mozart effect” has also been supported by findings that rats brought up on Mozart run faster through a complex network of paths or passages, known as a maze. In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen become the strong, circling winds of 74 miles per hour or more that are called hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as soft circling wind hundreds - even thousands - of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the southeast winds. When conditions are just right, warm moist air flows in at the bottom of such a wind, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it, the heat is changed to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to move counterclockwise motion. Trang 2/4 Mã đề thi 307
- The life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inches downpour, causing sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea – the mountains of water moving toward the hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore. Question 19: When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane? A. When it is more than 74 miles wide. B. When its winds reach 74 miles per hour. C. When it hits the Coastline. D.
