In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen become the strong, circling winds of 74 miles per hour or more that are called hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as soft circling wind hundreds - even thousands - of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the southeast winds. When conditions are just right, warm moist air flows in at the bottom of such a wind, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it, the heat is changed to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to move counterclockwise motion. The life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inches downpour, causing sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea – the mountains of water moving toward the hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore. Question 13: When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane? A. When it hits the Coastline. B. When it is more than 74 miles wide. C. When its winds reach 74 miles per hour. D. Another critical factor that plays a part in susceptibility to colds is age. A study done by the University of Michigan School of Public Health revealed particulars that seem to hold true for the general population. Infants are the most cold-ridden group, averaging more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to age three. After the age of three, girls are more susceptible than boys, and teenage girls average three colds a year to boys’ two. The general incidence of colds continues to decline into maturity. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds annually. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections, because people in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay having children until their thirties and forties experience the same sudden increase in cold infections. The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the highest end. Lower income in general forces people to live in more cramped quarters than those typically occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also adversely influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to colds is not yet clearly established, but an inadequate diet is suspected of lowering resistance in general. Question 42: The paragraph that precedes this passage most probably deals with ______. A. the recommended treatment of colds. B. methods of preventing colds among elderly people. C. a factor that affects susceptibility to colds D. minor diseases other than colds. Question 43: Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word particulars in the first paragraph? A. specific facts B. individual people C. small distinctions D. minor errors Question 44: What does the author claim about the study discussed in the passage? A. It specializes in children. B. It contains many inconsistencies. C. Its results apparently are relevant for the population as a whole. D. It contradicts the results of earlier studies in the field. Question 45: According to the passage, which of the following groups of people is most likely to catch colds? A. elderly women B. teenage boys C. infant boys D. young girls Question 46: There is information in the second paragraph of the passage to support which of the following conclusions? A. People who live in a cold climate have more colds than those who live in a warm one. B. Children infect their parents with colds. C. Men are more susceptible to colds than women. D. People who don’t have children are more susceptible to colds than those who do. Question 47: The author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph of the passage is to A. discuss the distribution of income among the people in the study. B. discuss the relationship between income and frequency of colds. C. prove that a poor diet causes colds. D. explain how cold viruses are transmitted.
