  • This model study was conducted in Antalya region greenhouses for the determination and registration of agricultural resources as a part of adjustment efforts for the European Union (EU) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The aim was to create new database systems based on remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS), rather than conventional land measurement techniques.

  • The technique can be applied for chlorophyll level monitoring in basic photosynthesis research, agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. Abiotic stress (water deficit, salinity, heat, heavy metals soil contamination, intense light, etc) affects significantly crop growth and yield in agricultural areas all over the world. Thus, it is imperative to study their effect upon the crops and discriminate among abiotic stresses using new noninvasive and nondestructive remote sensing precision diagnostic techniques.

  • The use of alternative fuels to displace coal reduces reliance on fossil fuels, reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants, and contributes to long-term cost savings for cement plants. Further, due to their high burning temperatures, cement kilns are well-suited for accepting and efficiently utilizing a wide range of wastes that can present a disposal challenge. This report begins with an overview of the types of alternative fuels used in cement kilns, focusing on energy and environmental considerations.

  • Database systems are a key component behind many of today’s computer systems. As a consequence, it is crucial that database systems provide correct and contin- uous service despite unpredictable circumstances, such as software bugs or attacks. This paper presents the de- sign of Byzantium, a Byzantine fault-tolerant database replication middleware that provides snapshot isolation (SI) semantics. SI is very popular because it allows in- creased concurrency when compared to serializability, while providing similar behavior for typical workloads.

  • A descriptive cross section study was done including 132 laborers of the tomato crop in the location of la Merced – Caldas, during 2009 and 2010. This study considered three phases: the first was the diagnosis to determine the biomarkers for the chosen pesticides. An analysis was made on pesticides residues in tomatoes as well as the characterization of the present productive systems of the crop through a participating rural diagnosis.

  • There is a large, complex and dynamic set of linkages between agriculture and water. Irrigated agriculture makes a substantial contribution to the growth in agricultural production across many countries. Yet, agriculture can have significant impacts (both positive and negative) on water ecosystems, and both agriculture and water are becoming increasingly vulnerable to climate change. In most OECD countries, agriculture is the major consumer of water and a significant source of diffuse water pollution.

  • The link between pesticides and cancer has long been a concern. While agriculture has traditionally been tied to pesticide-related illnesses, 19 of 30 commonly used lawn pesticides and 28 of 40 commonly used school pesticides are linked to cancer. Even with the growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer in recent years, a report released May 6, 2010 by the President’s Cancer Panel finds that the true burden of environmentally- induced cancer is greatly underestimated.

  • The Agrarian type applies to 205 regions, 26% of land area and 34% of agricultural area. This group’s share of population is smaller, at 24%, and its share of non-urban GDP only a little over half that, at 13%. The Diversified (Market Services) group has fewer regions (149), and just 17% of area, but accounts for a rather larger share of population (23%). At the same time it generates a much greater share of (non-urban) GPD, at 27%. Finally the Diversified (Secondary) group contains 80 regions, and accounts for 17% of total area, and 21% of agricultural area....

  • The contents of each cell in Table 12 are simply (and only) a reflection of the contents of the equivalent cell in Table 10. Thus, for example, (re)training of former farm workers is a direct response to the reduction in agricultural employment associated with the Agri-centric narrative, and measures to strengthen entrepreneurship and IT aspects of human capital could be a response to the depletion issues caused by the Urban-Rural narrative in PRR regions. Two summary points may be derived from Table 12.

  • At the other extreme (in terms of “weight”) are the Intermediate Remote regions, of which there are only 23. They account for only 2% of land area, the same proportion of agricultural land, and of population and GDP. The Predominantly Rural Accessible group is the second largest (264 regions). It accounts for roughly a third of both total area and of agricultural land. However these regions contain only a quarter of the “non-urban region” population of the EU, and produce only 22% of its GDP. Finally, 147 regions are classified as Predominantly Rural Remote.

  • The two types of Diversified regions seem likely to have similar and positive responses to the Agri-Centric and Urban-Rural meta narratives. The negative employment impacts of the Agri-Centric narrative may easily be absorbed by other parts of the economy, since agriculture’s role is relatively small in these regions. As the Urban-Rural narrative progresses, the economies of diversified regions are increasingly difficult to distinguish from those of adjacent PU regions, and they will therefore follow similar development trajectories.

  • “The study of economics does not seem to require any specialized gifts of an unusually high order. Is it not, intellectually regarded, a very easy subject compared with the higher branches of philosophy or pure science? Yet good, or even competent, economists are the rarest of birds. An easy subject, at which few excel! The paradox finds its explanation, perhaps, in that the master-economist must possess a rare combination of gifts. He must reach a high standard in several different directions and must combine talents not often found together.

  • Bioinformatics is a growing multidisciplinary field of science comprising biology, computer science, and mathematics. It is the theoretical and computational arm of modern biology. In other words, bioinformatics is a tool in the hands of biologists for analyzing huge amount of biological data available on mainstream public databases. Currently, bioinformatics has gained variety of applications in agriculture, medicine, engineering, and natural science. This book discusses a small portion of these applications along with basic concepts and fundamental techniques in bioinformatics....

  • The level of poultry production for each region is given in the first column of table 4. It is the 1998 estimate of poultry meat production (obtained from the Food and Agriculture Organization FAOSTAT database). The level of poultry production in the two composite regions is determined by first identifying which countries are net poultry exporters in FAO trade data. Then, the level of poultry production in the ROWE region is the sum of production in these exporting countries. Poultry production for the ROWM region is obtained by subtracting the quantity of poultry meat produced...
