  • Acetic acid or formic acid treatment of rice straw with the variation of reaction variables, namely acid concentration, catalyst (HCl or H2SO4) concentration, reaction time, temperature and liquor ratio, was investigated to ascertain effects on the dissolution of hemicellulose, which facilitates the dissolution of lignin during alkaline extraction or peroxyacid treatment and improved the drainability of straw pulp.

  • The chemical composition of bamboo is similar to that of wood. Table 2-2 shows the chemical composition of bamboo [Higuchi 1957]. The main constituents of bamboo culms are cellulose, hemi-cellulose and lignin, which amount to over 90% of the total mass. The minor constituents of bamboo are resins, tannins, waxes and inorganic salts. Compared with wood, however, bamboo has higher alkaline extractives, ash and silica contents [Tomalang et al. 1980; Chen et al. 1985]. Yusoff et al.

  • Chylous ascites refers to a turbid, milky, or creamy peritoneal fluid due to the presence of thoracic or intestinal lymph. Such a fluid shows Sudan-staining fat globules microscopically and an increased triglyceride content by chemical examination. Opaque milky fluid usually has a triglyceride concentration of 11.3 mmol/L (1000 mg/dL), but a triglyceride concentration of 2.3 mmol/L (200 mg/dL) is sufficient for the diagnosis.

  • This paper presents the result of study on the effect of ultrasound on extraction yield and quality of gelatin obtained from tuna skins using alkaline treatment method and alkaline-acid treatment method with ultrasound assistance. The results showed that ultrasound could shorten the time of alkaline treatment, while ensured the yield and the quality of obtained gelatin.
