  • Natural Resources and Economic Development explores a key para- dox: why is natural resource exploitation not yielding greater benefits to the poor economies of Africa, Asia and Latin America? Part One examines this paradox both through a historical review of resource use and development and through examining current theories that explain the under-performance of today’s resource-abundant economies, and proposes a frontier expansion hypothesis as an alter- native explanation.

  • ost of the problems of analyzing survey data have been reasonably well handled, except those revolving around the existence of interaction effects. Indeed, increased efficiency in handling multivariate analyses even with non-numerical variables, has been achieved largely by assuming additivity. An approach to survey data is proposed which imposes no restrictions on interaction effects, focuses on importance in reducing predictive error, operates sequentially, and is independent of the extent of linearity in the classifications or the order in which the explanatory factors are introduced...

  • Geochemical – Geochemical surveys that monitor the reservoir characteristics have routinely been used in the oil and gas industry and have been successfully adopted for use in monitoring carbon sequestration. Initially, reservoir samples (solids, liquids, and gases) are collected to establish a baseline prior to CO2 injection; tests can be repeated later to monitor CO2 migration (using tracers), or to assess geochemical changes, as CO2 saturated brine reacts with the reservoir formation.

  • Even a well-resourced, well-designed evaluation study is unlikely to be able to address all of the above thematic areas. Deciding what to monitor should be demand-driven, informed by the target audience and evaluation objectives as well as the thematic priorities of an organization. Similarly, the characteristics of a project or programme (such as type of intervention, scale, stage) and feasibility issues (such as institutional capacity, financial and human resources and time) are important considerations.

Analyses of variance were conducted to determine the effects of diet, environment and their interaction on gain, feed conversion, and breast meat yield. Body weight and feed efficiency (feed/gain) were affected primarily by environment temperature. Turkeys grown in the warm temperature environment had less body weight especially at 19 wks of age with somewhat better feed efficiency (Table 4).

  • In this paper we analyse in more detail the implications of Gabaix’s theory, taking as well an international perspective that looks at four economic areas. However, we do not restrict ourselves to considering big firms. Rather, we analyse the predictive power stemming from a large cross section of firms’equity prices with the key finding that, in a given month, it is only a small subset of these firms that help improve predictability. Overall, the composition of the set of most predictive firms remains stable for around half a year.
