This thesis reports research on analysis of the variance of surface electromyogram (sEMG) for healthy participants and people suffering with Lower Back Pain (LBP) when they are walking and running. SEMG signal recorded when the participants were walking and running on a treadmill. The strength and duration of the muscle activity for each heel strike were the features.

Feature extraction and optimized support vector machine for severity fault diagnosis in ball bearing
In this paper, a method for severity fault diagnosis of ball bearings is presented. The method is based on wavelet packet transform (WPT), statistical parameters, principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM). The key to bearing faults diagnosis is features extraction.

This research investigates the current white spaces of green marketing and country of origin effects, where new research could contribute theoretical value. The conducted research examines American and Swedish consumers’ environmental awareness, willingness and initiative in contributing to their societies for future sustainability. Using a sample of 118 consumers from an intermediated questionnaire for the offline market, a conceptual framework was developed where the study created the foundation and reasonable support for the purposed framework.

Obesity is a central feature of the metabolic syndrome and is associated with increased risk for insulin resistance and type II diabetes. Here, we investigated the contribution of human apoliprotein E3 and mouse apoli-protein E to the development of diet-induced obesity in response to western-type diet. Our data show that apolipoprotein E contributes to the development of obesity and other related metabolic disorders, and that human apolipoprotein E3 is more potent than mouse apolipoprotein E in promoting obesity in response to western-type diet. ...

Several crystal andNMRstructures of calmodulin (CaM)in complex with fragments derived from CaM-regulated pro-teins have been reported recently and reveal novel ways for CaMto interact with its targets. This review will discuss and compare features of the interaction between CaM and its target domains derived from the plasma membrane Ca 2+ -pump, the Ca 2+ -activated K + -channel, the Ca 2+ / CaM-dependent kinase kinase and the anthrax exotoxin.

Inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) is an important enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of inorganic pyro-phosphate (PPi)intoortho-phosphate (P i ). We report here the molecular cloning and characterization of a gene encoding the soluble PPase of the roundworm Ascaris suum. The predicted A. suumPPase consists of 360 amino acids with a molecular mass of 40.6 kDa and a pI of 7.1.

Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT⁄A), the most toxic substance known to mankind, is produced by Clostridium botulinumtype A as a complex with a group of neurotoxin-associated proteins (NAPs) through polycis-tronic expression of a clustered group of genes. NAPs are known to protect BoNT against adverse environmental conditions and proteolytic digestion. Hemagglutinin-33 (Hn-33) is a 33 kDa subcomponent of NAPs that is resistant to protease digestion, a feature likely to be involved in the protec-tion of the botulinum neurotoxin from proteolysis. ...

Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s diseases, affect millions of people worldwide and currently there are few effective treatments and no cures for these diseases. Transgenic mice expressing human transgenes for huntingtin, amyloid precursor protein, and other genes associated with familial forms of neurodegenerative disease in humans provide remarkable tools for studying neurodegeneration because they mimic many of the pathological and behavioural features of the human conditions. ...

EPR spectroscopy, performed after site-directed spin-labeling, was used to study structural dynamics in a cold-adapted alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.1.1). Differences in the structural environment of six spin-labeled side chains allowed them to be classified (with reference to previously obtained mobility maps) as belonging to loop positions (either relatively surface exposed or in structural contact) or helix positions (surface exposed, in contact, or buried).

A great deal must still be learnt on the structural features of amyloid assemblies, particularly prefibrillar aggregates, and the relationship of the latter with amyloid cytotoxicity. Presently, it is recognized that the popula-tion of unstable, heterogeneous amyloid oligomers and protofibrils is mainly responsible for amyloid cytotoxicity.

Group II introns are both catalytic RNAs and mobile retroelements that move through a process catalyzed by a RNP complex consisting of an intron-encoded protein and the spliced intron lariat RNA. Group II intron-encoded proteins are multifunctional and contain an N-terminal reverse transcriptase domain, followed by a putative RNA-binding domain (domain X) associated with RNA splicing or maturase activity and a C-terminal DNA binding⁄DNA endonuclease region.
