  • Paraphrase generation (PG) is important in plenty of NLP applications. However, the research of PG is far from enough. In this paper, we propose a novel method for statistical paraphrase generation (SPG), which can (1) achieve various applications based on a uniform statistical model, and (2) naturally combine multiple resources to enhance the PG performance. In our experiments, we use the proposed method to generate paraphrases for three different applications.

  • Statistical systems with high accuracy are very useful in real-world applications. If these systems can capture basic linguistic information, then the usefulness of these statistical systems improve a lot. This paper is an attempt at incorporating linguistic constraints in statistical dependency parsing. We consider a simple linguistic constraint that a verb should not have multiple subjects/objects as its children in the dependency tree.

  • Monte Carlo methods are ubiquitous in applications in the finance and insurance industry. They are often the only accessible tool for financial engineers and actuaries when it comes to complicated price or risk computations, in particular for those that are based on many underlyings. However, as they tend to be slow, it is very important to have a big tool box for speeding them up or – equivalently – for increasing their accuracy. Further, recent years have seen a lot of developments in Monte Carlo methods with a high potential for success in applications.

  • Fisher and Mahalanobis described Statistics as the key technology of the twentieth century. Since then Statistics has evolved into a field that has many applications in all sciences and areas of technology, as well as in most areas of decision making such as in health care, business, federal statistics and legal proceedings. Applications in statistics such as inference for Causal effects, inferences about the spatio- temporal processes, analysis of categorical and survival data sets and countless other functions play an essential role in the present day world.

  • Geostatistics is expanding very fast: concept- and technique-wi se. Keeping in view the importance of the subject, it was thought approp riate to bring out the second edition of this book. In this process, Chapter I has been expanded incorporating more detail s on sampling and sampling designs. In Chapter 2, a section on simulation has been introduced with emphasis on Monte-Carlo simulation with worked out examples. In Chapter 5, a procedure to compute variogram in the case of irregular grid has been outlined. Minor modific ations have been made in all other chapters.

  • My intention in this textbook is to provide a self-contained exposition of the fundamentals and applications of statistical thermodynamics for beginning graduate students in the engineering sciences. Especially within engineering, most students enter a course in statistical thermodynamics with limited exposure to statistics, quantum mechanics, and spectroscopy. Hence, I have found it necessary over the years to “start from the beginning,” not leaving out intermediary steps and presuming little knowledge in the discrete, as compared to the continuum, domain of physics.

  • In many natural language applications, there is a need to enrich syntactical parse trees. We present a statistical tree annotator augmenting nodes with additional information. The annotator is generic and can be applied to a variety of applications. We report 3 such applications in this paper: predicting function tags; predicting null elements; and predicting whether a tree constituent is projectable in machine translation. Our function tag prediction system outperforms significantly published results. ...

  • The literature concerning the application of statistics to linguistic problems and in particular to mechanical translation is reviewed. The conclusion is that much of the work done is of little direct use for mechanical translation, and that some of it is based on a misapprehension of what statistical techniques can in fact do.

  • The overall dynamic development of operational research in various fields of human activities urges the need for a clearer and mathematically more explicit classification of its methods. This need is also very urgent in the field of defense, particularly because of the complications of modern conflicts, as well as of new security requirements. One of the possible classifications of methods based on the theory of games as a mathematical model for solving conflict situations is presented in this paper. The connections between methods and their mathematical description are underlined.

  • The presence of Escherichia coli (EC) microorganisms in live organs can cause foodborne illnesses and food-related deaths. Here, EC assay was performed using a microcopper three-electrode (MCE) system, where a handmade MCE was used as a working electrode and Ag/AgCl as reference and platinum counter electrodes. Under a 1.0-ml EC standard, the diagnostic optimum conditions were sought. The analytical oxidation potential was obtained at -0.2 V via positive scan. Under these conditions, the stripping linear working range was attained with 0.2-0.7 mg/mL EC variations.
