The aim of the research was the processing of the vibration signatures from healthy and damaged composite beams acquired with the help of a Scanning Laser Vibrometer (SLV) upon excitation and analysis of the mode shapes acquired for damage detection. The displacement mode shapes acquired were then converted into curvature mode shapes with the help of a Central Difference Approximation method (CDA).

This research is built upon the determination of the Eigenpairs of one and two dimensional positive differential operators with periodic boundary conditions. The Schrödinger equation was solved for positive operators in both one and two dimensions. Fourier series were used to express the derivatives as the summation of Fourier terms. This led to a novel approach for the calculation of the eigenmodels of a perturbed potential well. The perturbation can be done via an electric field applied to the potential well.

The aim of this thesis was to investigate and characterise the effect on electron dosimetry that localising different forms of bolus, both approximately tissue equivalent and non tissue equivalent, in a non conventional, although reproducible locations, (ie not on the phantom surface). A series of experiments were derived to compare the differences in beam characteristics between the recognised conventional method of locating bolus on the surface to that of bolus supported by the Low Melting point Attenuator (LMA) Electron insert.

The main results and new points of this thesis are: The effective emissivity of the diffuse and isothermal cylindrical - inner - cone cavity has been calculated using the polynomial interpolation technique for the angle factor integrals describing the radiation exchange inside the cavity. The interpolation - calculated results are approximately accurate in comparison with those obtained by the analytical methods. This approach is a rather new in the practice of cavity effective emissivity calculation.

Research study sheds additional light on Americans’ financial fragility (Lusardi). Respondents were asked about confidence in their ability to come up with $2,000 in 30 days. This figure was chosen because it represents the approximate cost of an everyday emergency, like a major car or home repair, medical expense copay or legal expense. One quarter of survey respondents stated that they certainly could not come up with this sum of money, and another 15% probably could not do so. This finding suggests that nearly half of Americans are incapable of coping with a moderate financial shock.
