  • Piled embankment reinforced geosynthetics are used as integrated foundation systems for construction of embankment over soft ground. Several design guidelines are available in the literature for these embankments based on the soil arching and tensioned membrane theories. However, among design engineers, there is uncertainty regarding the applicability of these design methods. This paper investigates some practical aspects and identifies some inconsistencies in applying these design methods.

  • A java application can run inside a JVM and can only invoke the methods of the classes available inside this JVM • Distributed computing or processing resolves around clientserver technology where several client programs communicate with one or more server applications. An RMI application has to expose methods, which remote clients can invoke. • These methods which are meant to be remote, should be defined in an interface which extends the java.rmi.Remote interface

  • 1. Scope* 1.1 This test method is intended for use on any petroleum product. 2 A procedure suitable for black specimens, cylinder stock, and nondistillate fuel oil is described in 8.8. A procedure for testing the fluidity of a residual fuel oil at a specified temperature is described in Appendix X1. 1.2 Several ASTM test methods offering alternative proce- dures for determining pour points using automatic apparatus are available. None of them share the same designation number as Test Method D 97.

  • Data design is an essential part of the application development cycle. By analogy, building an application is like building a house. Having the right tools is important, but we need a solid foundation: the data structure. However, producing a good data structure can be a daunting challenge; the quest for a perfect data structure can lead us to new territories where many methods are available. Which one is the best? How can we keep our focus on the goal to achieve, without losing our time?

  • Although the studies differ in population coverage, sample design, method and periodicity of measurement, use of proxies, and treatment of nonresponse and missing data, the authors conclude that most analyses using data from the post- 1980 period show declines in the percentage with moderate disability and IADL disability. These declines have been shown to vary by gender (18, 47) and level of education (18); and they also differ between the young-old and the old-old (19). Generally, there is more improvement in less-severe disability....

  • Irrigation is one of the artificial way of supplying water to the plants/crops. The amount of water which will be available at the root zone of the plants depends upon the method of irrigation. The efficient use of water greatly depends on that where and how water is applying. Efficient use of is necessary to conserve the water for future use. Since water resources are exhaustible so it needs to conserve.

  • Available methods to simulate nucleotide or amino acid data typically use Markov models to simulate each position independently. These approaches are not appropriate to assess the performance of combinatorial and probabilistic methods that look for coevolving positions in nucleotide or amino acid sequences.

  • This chapter discusses 802.11 security for customers currently investigating an enterprise wireless LAN (WLAN) deployment. This chapter focuses on the most current enterprise security features that are currently available for 802.11 wireless networks. For example, this guide focuses on methods such as Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA2, and spends little time on Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).

  • Critical aspects for the wider application of ultraviolet (UV) light in drinking water treatment sometimes have been described, in spite of the success of the method as established in the field: • Absence of well-established and generally accepted design rules • Absence of a permanently active residual agent in the treated water • Suspicions of the possible photochemical formation of by-products • Possibility of revival–reactivation by repair mechanisms of irradiated organisms • Need for operational control of the permanent reliability of the technique...

  • Ground vehicles can navigate using signals from external navigation systems such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) (Figure 1.1), or by using signals from internal devices such as a compass, an odometer, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, or a full-blown inertial navigation system (INS). In practice, the most reliable and accurate navigation is obtained by combining data from all available sources, including static databases such as a digitized map. This chapter will discuss many of these sources of navigation data, and methods for combining them....

  • FUZZY OBSERVER DESIGN In practical applications, the state of a system is often not readily available. Under such circumstances, the question arises whether it is possible to determine the state from the system response to some input over some period of time. For linear systems, a linear observer w1x provides an affirmative answer if the system is observable. Likewise, a systematic design method of fuzzy regulators and fuzzy observers plays an important role for fuzzy control systems.
