  • Yet, despite progress in the identification of problems and the development of improved methodologies -- and the possibility of regulatory initiatives that feature mandated environmental accounting -- the field lacks a methodology for evaluating the social and private benefits of improved environmental accounting. Whether regulators continue to motivate EA indirectly via outreach to the private sector, or more directly via incentives such as tax breaks or mandates, private sector resources and regulatory attention should be focused on initiatives that promise the greatest benefit.

  • When students move from the lecture hall to the microbiology laboratory, they need help bridging the gap between the theory and the practice of what they are learning. The equipment is unfamiliar, the procedures are unfamiliar, and many of the materials they are handling are unfamiliar. Linking the information from their classroom lectures to the laboratory procedures is necessary for their ultimate success. Our goal for this laboratory manual is to provide the bridge that helps students integrate their classroom lectures with their laboratory experiences.

  • Aeromonas hydrophila and other motile aeromonads are among the most common bacteria in freshwater habitats throughout the world, and these bacteria frequently cause disease among cultured and feral fishes. From descriptions of fish diseases in the early scientific literature, Otte speculated that septicemic infections in fish caused by motile aeromonads were common throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. Although the bacterial etiology of these early reports was inconclusive, the pathology was similar to that observed with red leg disease in frogs, in which A.

  • In this study, we isolated three bacterial strains including KG 2.2, KG 2.3 and KG 2.5 in which their growth causes spoilage of the fermented pickles with formation of white biofilm layers. On basis of morphological and biochemical characteristics, these bacterial strains belong to Bacillus genus.

  • The most common method of treatment for common mental health disorders in primary care is psychotropic medication. This is due to the limited availability of psychological interventions, despite the fact that these treatments are generally preferred by patients. Since 2004, NICE has produced a series of guidelines on the care and treatment of common mental health disorders (see section 6 for details of related guidelines).

  • Bacillary necrosis occurs very often in intensive farming of Tra catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) in the Mekong delta. Causative bacterium was identified as Edwardsiella ictaluri. Diseased fish with typical focal necrosis in the liver, kidney and spleen were sampled from 17 fish farms in Can Tho, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, An Giang and Ben Tre Province for bacterial isolation and identification. Among 97 isolates, 47 (48 %) were identified as E. ictaluri.

  • In 2002, an estimated 250,000 healthcare-associated pneumonias developed in U.S. hospitals and 36,000 of these were associated with deaths.1 Patients with mechanically-assisted ventilation have a high risk of developing healthcare-associated pneumonia. For the year 2011, NHSN facilities reported more than 3,525 VAPs and the incidence for various types of hospital units ranged from 0.0-4.9 per 1,000 ventilator days.2 Prevention and control of healthcare-associated pneumonia is discussed in the CDC/HICPAC document, Guidelines for Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Pneumonia, 20033.
