The protective effect of early pregnancy against breast cancer can be attrib-uted to the transition from undifferentiated cells in the nulliparous to the differentiated mature cells during pregnancy. Considerable evidence sug-gests strongly that the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of adipose breast tissue is inversely associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Elevated cell death in human preimplantation embryos is one of the cellu-lar events compromising pregnancy rates after assisted reproductive tech-nology treatments. We therefore explored the molecular pathways regulating cell death at the blastocyst stage in human embryos cultured in vitro. Owing to limited availability of human embryos, these pathways were further characterized in mouse blastocysts.
