  • The paper presents an updated checklist of Diaptomidae in Vietnam, based on literature reviews and on our own data from voucher specimens deposited in the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR), Hanoi. Taxonomic status of diaptomid species occurring in the country is revised. A total of 13 genera and 29 species have been recorded; of those 29 species, 8 are endemic, and other 8 are newly added to the latest fauna list in 2001.

  • The state of aquatic ecosystems reflects the general state of the biosphere. The situation in the biosphere affected by anthropogenic factors was characterized as “a slow explosion” (Fedorov 1987). The global change in the biosphere and climatic system of the Earth is a manifestation of this “slow explosion” (World Resources 1990–1991, Izrael et al. 1992).

  • Conserving Living Natural Resources provides students, managers, and general readers with an introduction to the principles of managing biological resources. It presents the historical and conceptual contexts of three seminal approaches to the management of living natural resources: utilitarian management for harvest of featured species and control of unwanted species, protection and restoration of populations and habitats to maintain biodiversity, and management of complex ecosystems to sustain both productivity and biodiversity.

  • From microorganisms to whales, from single cells to complex organisms, from plants to animals to fungi, from body plans to behavior, the diversity of life is amazing. Living organisms have a profound impact on our physical world of ocean, landscape, and climate; around us is a multitude of diverse ecosystems that provide a livable environment and many valuable resources. The study of life—biology—is a multifaceted endeavor that uses observation, exploration, and experiments to gather information and test hypotheses about topics ranging from climate change to stem cells.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate three NLP applications of the BioLexicon, which is a lexical resource tailored to the biology domain. The applications consist of a dictionary-based POS tagger, a syntactic parser, and query processing for biomedical information retrieval. Biological terminology is a major barrier to the accurate processing of literature within biology domain. In order to address this problem, we have constructed the BioLexicon using both manual and semiautomatic methods. We demonstrate the utility of the biology-oriented lexicon within three separate NLP applications. ...

  • In this paper, we propose an approach for identifying curatable articles from a large document set. This system considers three parts of an article (title and abstract, MeSH terms, and captions) as its three individual representations and utilizes two domain-specific resources (UMLS and a tumor name list) to reveal the deep knowledge contained in the article. An SVM classifier is trained and cross-validation is employed to find the best combination of representations. The experimental results show overall high performance. ...
