  • Modern biomedical research is often organized in collaborations involving labs worldwide. In particular in systems biology, complex molecular systems are analyzed that require the generation and interpretation of heterogeneous data for their explanation, for example ranging from gene expression studies and mass spectrometry measurements to experimental techniques for detecting molecular interactions and functional assays.

  • The human body is composed of structures organized in a hierarchical fashion: from biomolecules assembled into polymers, to multimeric assemblies such as cellular organelles, to individual cells, to tissues, to organ systems working together in health and disease- each dominated by a characteristic length scale. Decades of science and engineering are now converging to provide tools that enable the orderly manipulation of biological systems at previously inaccessible, though critically important, length scales (...

  • Work on Deisboeck and Kresh's Complex Systems Science in BioMedicine started years ago. In fact, thoughts and ideas leading up to this textbook date back to our first conversation, sometime in the fall of 1996. We quickly found common ground, and talked about emergence and self-organization and their relevance for medicine. We were both fascinated by the idea of complexity and marveled about its tremendous possibilities for cancer research, which was then and still is Tom's main scientific interest. Much has happened in science and technology since we first discussed our vision.

  • Biomedical Engineering is a highly interdisciplinary and well established discipline spanning across engineering, medicine and biology. A single definition of Biomedical Engineering is hardly unanimously accepted but it is often easier to identify what activities are included in it. This volume collects works on recent advances in Biomedical Engineering and provides a bird-view on a very broad field, ranging from purely theoretical frameworks to clinical applications and from diagnosis to treatment....

  • But even that information is not sufficient to understand the cell’s complexity, so the ultimate goal of such research is to identify and characterize the elaborate networks of gene and protein interactions in the entire system that contribute to disease. This concept of systems biology is based on the premise that a disease can be fully comprehended only

  • Image recognition and classification is one of the most actively pursued areas in the broad field of imaging sciences and engineering. The reason is evident: the ability to replace human visual capabilities with a machine is very important and there are diverse applications. The main idea is to inspect an image scene by processing data obtained from sensors.

  • The current extraordinary advances in basic biomedical and social sciences have unprecedented potential to improve the human condition. These insights, together with the human genome project and its successor proteomics, will require an enormous commitment to translational research to harvest their applications for medicine and public health. The progress in political and social theory, linguistics, statistics, psychology, and behavioral sciences generally deserves a similarly broad application of human research to reach full expression.

  • In the summer of 1866, the author of this little book, moved by the repeated and earnest solicitation of his Medical Classes, prepared and printed a small pamphlet entitled Practical Principles of Medical Electricity, designed more particularly, as the present work also is, as a Hand-Book to assist the memory of those who have taken a regular course of LECTURES from himself, or from some other competent instructor in the same general system of Practice. The edition of that work was exhausted somewhat more than a year ago. Still, the book has continued to be frequently called for.

  • Pressing demand. Past market-based systems never saw real field testing, and contention was often artifi- cially generated. Today, a deployed market system could have immediate usage and solve real resource conflicts. Real usage data will help researchers calibrate and eval- uate their market-based resource schedulers. Previous mechanism designs were not able to take advantage of user feedback to drive the mechanism design process. Improved operating system infrastructure.

  • This paper introduces an unsupervised vector approach to disambiguate words in biomedical text that can be applied to all-word disambiguation. We explore using contextual information from the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) to describe the possible senses of a word. We experiment with automatically creating individualized stoplists to help reduce the noise in our dataset. We compare our results to SenseClusters and Humphrey et al. (2006) using the NLM-WSD dataset and with SenseClusters using conflated data from the 2005 Medline Baseline. ...

  • This series is directed to healthcare professionals who are leading the transformation of health care by using information and knowledge. Launched in 1988 as Computers in Health Care, the series offers a broad range of titles: some addressed to specific professions such as nursing, medicine, and health administration; others to special areas of practice such as trauma and radiology. Still other books in the series focus on interdisciplinary issues, such as the computer-based patient record, electronic health records, and networked healthcare systems....

  • For biomedical information extraction, most systems use syntactic patterns on verbs (anchor verbs ) and their arguments. Anchor verbs can be selected by focusing on their arguments. We propose to use predicate-argument structures (PASs), which are outputs of a full parser, to obtain verbs and their arguments. In this paper, we evaluated PAS method by comparing it to a method using part of speech (POSs) pattern matching. POS patterns produced larger results with incorrect arguments, and the results will cause adverse effects on a phase selecting appropriate verbs. ...
