Broadband Wireless Mobile (3G and 4G) will be the next key developments in wireless communications. Immense interest has been fuelled by large demand for high frequency utilisation as well as a large number of users requiring simultaneous multidimensional high data rate access for the applications of wireless mobile internet and e-commerce. Broadband wireless mobile extends the corporate LAN to common areas such as meeting rooms and enables in-building public wireless hotspots such as airport lounges to provide wireless portable computer connectivity...

This article compares and contrasts two technologies for delivering broadband wireless Internet access services: ‘‘3G’’ vs. ‘‘WiFi’’. The former, 3G, refers to the collection of third-generation mobile technologies that are designed to allow mobile operators to offer integrated data and voice services over mobile networks. The latter, WiFi, refers to the 802.11b wireless Ethernet standard that was designed to support wireless LANs.

Over the last few decades, the wireless industry has changed and grown, time and time again. This industry as a whole shifted from 1G for analog to digital phones 2G (SMS - Short Message Services and voicemail), then from 2G to 3G, 3.5G networks, which came with the mobile broadband internet connections that enabled the smartphone revolution, to 4G and 4GLTE (Long Term Evolution) which had high data rate cellular network. Future fifth-generation wireless communication networks (5G) [1, 2] will make an important difference and will add more services and benefits to the world over 4G.

Introduction to Broadband Wireless roadband wireless sits at the confluence of two of the most remarkable growth stories of the telecommunications industry in recent years. Both wireless and broadband have on their own enjoyed rapid mass-market adoption. Wireless mobile services grew from 11 million subscribers worldwide in 1990 to more than 2 billion in 2005 [1]. During the same period, the Internet grew from being a curious academic tool to having about a billion users.

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless broadband access network named by industry group called the WiMAX forum formed in June 2001. It is Wireless MAN with IEEE 802.16 family standards. Loosely, WiMAX is a standardized wireless version of Ethernet that enables the last mile, intended primarily as an alternative to wire technologies (such as Cable Modems, DSL and T1/E1 links ) to provide broadband access to customer premises.

Wireless Broadband Systems and Wireless ATM∗ Broadband systems are generally those systems that provide a high transmission rate besides other features like integration of services. An exact definition of this term can be found in ITU Rec. I.113, which characterizes broadband services as having a higher transmission rate than a primary multiplex connection in ISDN (2048 kbit/s). A brief overview of the current state of development of wireless broadband systems, particularly in Europe, including the fundamentals of ATM in BISDN, is given below.

Recently, considerable research effort has been put into the direction of integrating the broadband wired ATM [1] and wireless technologies. In 1996 the ATM Forum approved a study group devoted to wireless ATM, WATM. WATM [2–4] aims to provide end-to-end ATM connectivity between mobile and stationary nodes. WATM can be viewed as a solution for next-generation personal communication networks, or a wireless extension of the B-ISDN networks, which will support guaranteed QoS integrated data transmission.
