  • OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library: is an open-source BSD-licensed library that includes several hundreds of computer vision algorithms. The document describes the so-called OpenCV 2.x API, which is essentially a C++ API, as opposite to the C-based OpenCV 1.x API. The latter is described in opencv1x.pdf. OpenCV has a modular structure, which means that the package includes several shared or static libraries.

  • There is a growing demand of image processing in diverse application areas, such as multimedia computing, secured image data communication, biomedical imaging, biometrics, remote sensing, texture understanding, pattern recognition, content-based image retrieval, compression, and so on. As a result, it has become extremely important to provide a fresh look at the contents of an introductory book on image processing. We attempted to introduce some of these recent developments, while retaining the classical ones....

  • The evolution of technological advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, “smart” algorithms, knowledge-based databases, and their overall system integration has resulted in new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. The development of infrared cameras with focal plane arrays not requiring cooling added a new dimension to this modality. New detector materials with improved thermal sensitivity are now available and production of high-density focal plane arrays (640×480) has been achieved.

  • This book is designed as a step-by-step tutorial that can be read through from beginning to end, with each chapter building on the last. Each section, however, can also be used as a reference for implementing various camera models, special effects, etc. The chapters are filled with illustrations, screenshots, and example code, and each chapter is based around the creation of one or more example projects.

  • Memex, with links and comments holding a central role, served as our blueprint for MyLifeBits. Faced with folders full of documents, messages, phone calls, photos, songs, etc., with inherent or potential metadata such as author, camera, comments, location, and time, we needed a framework to hold and link all of these objects in the web-like and almost arbitrary fashion that Bush described. We deemed search to be the most critical requirement. Furthermore, we realized that metadata are often a key part of user recall, e.g.

  • Understanding Apple’s iPhone technology Examining the iPhone’s specifications Highlighting what makes the iPhone unique In the 1980s Apple Computer was the leading innovator in the computer business. Their 1984 Macintosh computer revolutionized personal computing and desktop publishing alike. But by the 1990s the company had begun to fade; it was depending on its loyal user base and its successes in the past rather than creating the newest cutting-edge technology. That changed again in 1996 when founder Steve Jobs returned to the fold.

  • An efficient smoke detection algorithm on color video sequences obtained from a stationary camera is proposed. Our algorithm considers dynamic and static features of smoke and composed of basic steps: preprocessing; slowly moving areas and pixels segmentation in a current input frame based on adaptive background subtraction; merge slowly moving areas with pixels into blobs; classification of the blobs obtained before.

  • Most graphics nowadays are pixel-based. Every point in the graphic is represented by one pixel. This is a really good solution for most scenarios, including digital photography (where you really want to maintain every single information the camera is “seeing”), but there are shortcomings too. For instance, have a look at Figure 1-1, where you see a simple text made in Microsoft Paint. This text is pixel based. In Figure 1-2, you see the same text, but this time the image 100% and height have been enlarged.

  • Auto Exposure Bracketing: Auto Exposure Bracketing performs automatic exposure bracketing with varied shutter speed and/or aperture. Flash Exposure Bracketing: Enables a photographer to automatically bracket exposures at varied flash output levels, in TTL auto flash shooting, without changing the shutter speed and/or aperture. AE (Automatic Exposure) lock : Used to hold an automatically controlled shutter speed and/or aperture. Recommended when the photographer wants to control an exposure based on a scene's particular brightness area with Center Weighted or Spot Metering.

  • The automotive industry is currently developing sensor-based solutions to increase vehicle safety in speed zones where driver error is most common: at lower speeds, when the driver is stuck in traffic, and at higher speeds, when the driver is cruising on a long stretch of highway (see Figure 3). These systems, known as Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), use a combination of advanced sensors, such as stereo cameras and long- and short-range RADAR, combined with actuators, control units, and integrating software, to enable cars to monitor and respond to their surroundings.

  • In the early days of personal imaging, a specific location was selected from which a measurement space or the like was constructed. From this single vantage point, a collection of differently illuminated/exposed images was constructed using the wearable computer and associated illumination apparatus. However, this approach was often facilitated by transmitting images from a specific location (base station) back to the wearable computer, and vice versa.

  • Optical motion capture systems are based on small reflective sensors called markers attached to an actor's body and on several cameras focused on performance space. By tracking positions of markers, one can get locations for corresponding key points in the animated model, e.g. we attach markers at joints of a person and record the position of markers from several different directions. We then reconstruct the 3D position of each key point at each time. The main advantage of this method is freedom of movement; it does not require any cabling....
