  • The topic of the paper is the problem how to define case relations by semantic predicates. A general principle is outlined, which renders it possible to "calculate" case relations for a given representation of a (verb-)sememe by means of expressions. This principle is based on an assignment of case relations to primitive predicates and modification rules for nested expressions.

  • The way we customize our things says a lot about who we are. Today, everywhere we look, we are surrounded by a convergence of media – videogames, advertisements, and television. We are told what to believe, how to think, and how to act.We are told what’s cool and what’s not, what we should buy, what we should wear, and what music we should listen to. Hardware hacking has never been about what the mainstream media thinks. It’s about creativity, education, experimentation, personalization, and just having fun. This book is no different....

  • “Housing Our Elders” (1999) uses a supplement to the 1995 AHS on home accessibility needs and modifications to develop a baseline of information on elderly housing conditions, needs, and strategies. It is found that “overall, older Americans are among the best housed citizens of a well-housed Nation”. However, “millions of elderly households continue to live in housing that costs too much, is in substandard condition, or fails to accommodate their physical capabilities or assistance needs”.

  • Economics: Evaluation of the traffic-related health impacts and their monetarisation: Using epidemiological data regarding the relation between air pollution and morbidity and premature mortality, the number of cases of morbidity and/or premature mortality attributed to air pollution is determined for each of the health outcomes separately, using specific exposure-response functions. The same operations are carried out for the theoretical situation in which there is no road traffic-related air pollution.

  • In recent years many countries have made drastic changes to the architecture of financial supervision, and more countries are contemplating modifications. The current restructuring wave is making the supervisory landscape less uniform than in the past. In several countries the architecture still reflects the classic model, with separate agencies for banking, securities and insurance supervision.

In this process, Chapter I has been expanded incorporating more detail s on sampling and sampling designs. In Chapter 2, a section on simulation has been introduced with emphasis on Monte-Carlo simulation with worked out examples. In Chapter 5, a procedure to compute variogram in the case of irregular grid has been outlined. Minor modific ations have been made in all other chapters.

  • The iRobot Roomba is perhaps the best example of mobile robotics entering the home. It performs a useful task and is relatively inexpensive, and while it doesn’t look like Rosie the Robot on The Jetsons, it does have a charm of its own. The purpose of this book is to introduce robot hacking to people who are interested in programming and modifying their own robot but who don’t want to destroy a functioning Roomba. This “reversible hacking” is device modification that can be undone to return the device to its original state.

  • Please note: the Department cannot advise on whether a particular vehicle is suitable for use in Britain. You should always consult the manufacturer or his agent for advice, especially about whether any modifications are necessary and whether they can be made. You should give the manufacturer as much information as possible about the origin of the vehicle so that he can give appropriate help. Ideally, this should include the Vehicle Identification Number - usually 17 characters, but 8 in the case of vehicles made for the Japanese market - stamped on the chassis. ...

  • In regard to the relatively trivial examples of aesthetic objects treated so far, our pleasure rested in each case on an intuitive presentation of something external (on the presentation of `physical phenomena' in Brentano's sense). We have now, however, reached a point where we must turn inward and consider the feelings of higher order aesthetic pleasure which are provoked by our presentations of mental, and particular emotional, phenomena themselves.

  • After the basic Lean conversion takes place, Lean’s continual improvement culture means that modifications to material inputs, product outputs, non-product outputs, equipment, equipment configurations, and operating parameters are likely to be the norm, and result in a manufacturing environment subject to constant, on-going change. In this environment, even minimal regulatory delay holds the potential to erode quickly a process improvement’s financial return, which, in turn, could result in foregoing the resource productivity enhancements associated with the change.

  • We propose a plan-based approach for responding to user queries in a collaborative environment. We argue that in such an environment, the system should not accept the user's query automatically, but should consider it a proposal open for negotiation. In this paper we concentrate on cases in which the system and user disagree, and discuss how this disagreement can be detected, negotiated, and how final modifications should be made to the existing plan.

  • The aim of the present paper is to show how a rule-based parser for the Italian language has been extended to analyze sentences involving conjunctions. The most noticeable fact is the ease with ~4nich the required modifications fit in the previous parser structure. In particular, the rules written for analyzing simple sentences (without conjunctions) needed only small changes. On the contrary, more substantial changes were made to the e~oeption-handling rules (called "natural changes") that are used to restructure the tree in case of failure of a syntactic hypothesis. ...

  • The aim of this study is to examine whether the change of schema would affect the process of encoding and retrieval. This experiment is a modification of Anderson and Pichert’s study. The independent variable in the experiment was the two different schemas used in the study (Geography student or tourist) and the dependent variable was the extent to which the participants could recall the story, specifically the number of words in this case. The results suggested that a change in schema of the same story would improve recall, as found by Anderson and Pichert.
