  • The diseaseFusarium head blight (scab) causes severe problems for farmers and for the industries that use cereals. It is likely that the fungi that cause scab (Fusariumspp.) use various enzymes when they invade grains. We are studying enzymes that the fungi may use to hydrolyze grain proteins. To do this,Fusarium culmorumwas grown in a gluten-con-taining medium from which an alkaline serine proteinase with a molecular mass of 28.7 kDa was puri®ed by size-exclusion and cation exchange chromatographies....

Disease of the kidney must be taken into account when prescribing drugs that are eliminated by it. Diuretic drugs: their sites and modes of action, classification, adverse effects and uses in cardiac, hepatic, renal and other conditions. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. • Sorption is a process by which chemicals or organisms become attached to soils and/or the geologic rock material (aquifer solids) and removed from the water. Often the sorption process is reversible and solutes desorb and hence dissolved-solute plumes are retarded, rather than solutes being permanently retained by the solids. Cation exchange is the interchange between cations in solution and cations on the surfaces of clay particles or organic colloids. Filtration is a process that affects particulate contaminants (e.g.

  • Empirical evidence suggests that movements in international relative prices (such as the real exchange rate) are large and persistent. Nontraded goods, both in the form of ¯nal consumption goods and as an input into the production of ¯- nal tradable goods, are an important aspect behind international relative price movements. In this paper we show that nontraded goods have important impli- cations for exchange rate behavior, even though °uctuations in the relative price of nontraded goods account for a relatively small fraction of real exchange rate movements.

  • How much of a supplemental nutrient to apply should be determined based on prior experience of the farmer, obser- vation of plant growth, knowledge of soil characteristics such as organic matter, cation exchange capacity, phosphorus and potassium supplying ability, and base saturation, knowl- edge of crop needs and field history, and understanding of the nutrient supplying power of the material to be used. An example of nutrient application rates is provided in Table 2. Overapplication can cause problems in crop production as well as in the environment.

  • This section closes with a review of the evidence for managed port- folio performance based on the traditional measures. This discussion touches on the issues of survivorship bias and persistence in perfor- mance, among other topics. Chapter 3 discusses Conditional Performance Evaluation. Here, the idea is to measure performance accounting for the fact that the expected returns and risks for investing may vary over time depend- ing on the state of the economy. An example motivates the approach.

  • Na+-Montmorillonite (Na+-MMT) minerals were organically modified by adding different amounts of surfactant octadecylamine corresponding to the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the pristine montmorillonites. The characteristic of the organo-MMT were obtained by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy. The amount of added surfactant has direct effect on the interlayer separation and the organophicility-hydrophicility balance of MMT. An optimal surfactant/CEC ratio about 1.0 leads to two distinct distance of 15.5 Å and 32.

  • Alkali Administration Chronic administration of alkali to individuals with normal renal function rarely, if ever, causes alkalosis. However, in patients with coexistent hemodynamic disturbances, alkalosis can develop because the normal capacity to excrete HCO3– may be exceeded or there may be enhanced reabsorption of HCO 3–. Such patients include those who receive HCO3– (PO or IV), acetate loads (parenteral hyperalimentation solutions), citrate loads (transfusions), or antacids plus cation-exchange resins (aluminum hydroxide and sodium polystyrene sulfonate). ...

  • Muirhead (1987) reviews the large literature on shrinkage estimators of the covariance matrix in finite-sample statistical decision theory. All these estimators suffer from at least two severe drawbacks, either of which is enough to make them ill-suited to stock returns: (i) they break down when N T; (ii) they do not exploit the a priori knowledge that stock returns tend to be positively correlated to one another.

  • After some further kilometres, sodium begins to increase by ion exchange at the expense of calcium, producing a natural softening of the water. Eventually, the available calcium in the water is exhausted, but sodium continues to increase to a level greater than could be achieved purely by cation exchange. As chloride also begins to increase, this marks the point at which recharging water moving slowly down through the aquifer mixes with much older saline water present in the sediments (Figure 4.1).

One of these active proteins was purified from the culture broth ofB.cereususing anion-exchange and gel-filtration chro-matography. The purified toxin, with a molecular mass of 34 kDa, was identified as sphingomyelinase C (EC3.1.4.12) on the basis of its N-terminal and internal amino-acid sequences. A recombinant sphingomyelinase C expressed in Escherichia coliwas as potent as the native protein in killing the cockroaches....
