  • The geometrical and electromagnetic variables of a rectangular-type magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) circulation system are optimized to solve MHD equations for the active decay heat removal system of a prototype Gen-IV sodium fast reactor. Decay heat must be actively removed from the reactor coolant to prevent the reactor system from exceeding its temperature limit. A rectangular-type MHD circulation system is adopted to remove this heat via an active system that produces developed pressure through the Lorentz force of the circulating sodium.

  • The experimental results showed that the natural circulation system is feasible in removing the decay heat, even though some fluctuations may occur in the operation. The uneven temperature distribution in the water tank may be inevitable because convection occurs on the outside of the condensing tube besides boiling with decreasing the decay power. The instabilities in the natural circulation loop are sensitive to heat flux and system resistance rather than the water level in the steam drum and water tank. RELAP5 code shows reasonable results compared with experimental data.

  • In this study, the operation and response capability of safety system in nuclear reactor WWER-1000 was analyzed during the accidents that involved the failure of main circulation pump or feed water pumps. The nuclear reactor WWER-1000 simulator developed by IAEA showed that safety systems such as the EP, the PP and the AUU are capable of controlling the reactor power by adjusting the control rods during the accidents.

  • The distribution types of uniform, power increasing, power decreasing and sine function are investigated. Through the analysis, it can be concluded that different power distribution has a great influence on the flow of natural circulation if the total power of heating is constant. It was found that the peak flow of supercritical water natural circulation is maximal when the distribution of heating power is monotonically decreasing, minimal when it is monotonically increasing, and moderate at uniform or the sine type of heating.

  • Self-pressurization analysis of the natural circulation integral nuclear reactor through a new dynamic model is studied. Unlike conventional pressurized water reactors, this reactor type controls the system pressure using saturated coolant water in the steam dome at the top of the pressure vessel. Selfpressurization model is developed based on conservation of mass, volume, and energy by predicting the condensation that occurs in the steam dome and the flashing inside the chimney using the partial differential equation.
