  • In 1991, optical coherence tomography (OCT) was initially introduced to image the transpar‐ ent tissue of eyes at a level of resolution significantly greater than conventional ultrasound technique. OCT uses infrared light to produce images on a micrometer scale. The intensity of the reflected light is displayed as a false color or grey scale image. OCT imaging is analo‐ gous to ultrasound B mode imaging, except that it performs imaging by measuring the in‐ tensity of reflected or back scattered light rather than acoustic...

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an interferometric technique based on optical coherent gating. In OCT, imaging contrast originates from the sample inhomogeneous scattering properties that are linearly dependent on the sample’s refractive indices. OCT offers axial resolution of 2‐15 μm and penetration depth around 2 mm. Since its invention in the late 1980s and early 1990s, OCT has experienced explosive growth in both technology and application.

  • This edition of Optical Metrology contains a new chapter about computerized optical processes, including digital holography and digital speckle photography. Chapter 2, on Gaussian optics, and Chapter 5, on light sources and detectors, are greatly expanded to include descriptions of standard imaging systems, light-emitting diodes and solid-state detectors. Separate new sections on optical coherence tomography, speckle correlation, the Fast Fourier Transform, temporal phase unwrapping and fibre Bragg sensors are included. Finally, a new appendix about Fourier series is given.

  • This book presents the salient features of optic nerve disorders, encompassing optic neuritis, papilledema, ischemic optic neuropathies, compressive and infi ltrative optic neuropathies, traumatic optic neuropathies, nutritional and toxic optic neuropathies, hereditary optic neuropathies, and optic disc tumors. Chapters 1 to 9 outline key clinical aspects of each of these disorders. Chapter 10 illustrates some newer applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in monitoring optic nerve-related processes causing retinal nerve fi ber layer loss and in ruling out retinal disorders....

  • In the eight years since publication of the first edition, enormous progress has been made in the field of skin imaging and analysis. Because of the broad array of new methods now available to the research scientist—and more and more to the clinically- oriented dermatologist—we were able to widen the scope of this book from the skin surface to the entire skin. This is also reflected in the change of the volume title, Bioengineering of the Skin: Skin Imaging and Analysis. Hence, this second edition is a major revision of the first edition, with more than 30 new chapters added....

  • Different terms are employed in the literature to specify this method on investigations: dualbeam coherent interferometry or laser Doppler interferometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT) or optical coherence reflectometry. OCT is analogous to ultrasonic imaging, which measures the intensity of reflected infrared light rather than reflected sound waves from the sample. Time gating is employed so that the time for the light to be reflected back (or echo delay time) is used to assess the intensity of back-reflection as a function of depth.
