  • In 1993, the first of the GIS Research U.K. (GISRUK) conferences was held at the University of Keele. Before that, U.K. GIS conferences had been very broad-based, bringing together the entire spectrum of people who created and used spatial data and the software to process the data. While such conferences were very valuable, it was felt that there was also a need for an academic conference where the focus would be purely on research.

But how much of the allocating should be performed by markets and how much by governments? This collection of readings will help students appreciate the power of the market. It supplements theoretical explanations of how markets work with concrete examples, addresses questions about whether markets actually work well and offers evidence that supposed "market failures" are not as serious as claimed. ...

  • A mutual fund is a type of investment fund. An investment fund is a collection of investments, such as stocks, bonds or other funds. Unlike most other types of investment funds, mutual funds are “open-ended,” which means as more people invest, the fund issues new units or shares. A mutual fund typically focuses on specific types of investments. For example, a fund may invest mainly in government bonds, stocks from large companies or stocks from certain countries. Some funds may invest in a mix of stocks and bonds, or other mutual funds....

  • In the past two decades a number of investigators have attempted to combine measures of mortality and morbidity in order to address issues of whether Americans are living longer, healthy lives, as well as just longer lives. In general, a life-table approach is used to divide increases in years lived into healthy and unhealthy years. These measures have the same useful characteristics as life-table measures based only on mortality. They can be compared across time and place, and they summarize a large amount of age-specific data.

  • The Essays in this volume, as will be apparent, have all of them had an occasional origin. They bear evident traces of particular controversy and contain much criticism of authors who are hardly, if at all, known in this country. Their author thought it worth while to collect them in one volume and it has been, I am sure, worth while to have them translated into English, because though written on different occasions and in different controversies they have all the same purpose. They are an attempt to make clear by philosophical criticism the real purpose and value of Marx's work....

  • This paper presents a new mechanism that allows the application to register its interest in a specific event, and then efficiently collect the notification of the event at a later time. The set of events that this mechanism covers is shown to include not only those described above, but may also be extended to unforeseen event sources with no modification to the API. The rest of this paper is structured as follows: Section 2 examines where the central bottleneck of poll() and se- lect() is, Section 3 explains the design goals, and Section 4 presents the API of new mechanism.

Thirty-two users had to solve simple statistics problems using an unfamiliar statistical package. Users received help on how to use the statistical package by typing utterances to what they believed was a computerized adviser. The observed limited set of users' grammatical and ungrammatical forms demonstrates the sufficiency of a very restricted grammar of English for a natural language interface to an advisory sys* tem.
