The first piece of hardware that I want to discuss is a network adapter. There are many different names for network adapters, including network cards, Network Interface Cards, NICs. These are all generic terms for the same piece of hardware. A network card’s job is to physically attach a computer to a network, so that the computer can participate in network communications.

Optical communication is very much useful in telecommunication systems, data processing and networking. It consists of a transmitter that encodes a message into an optical signal, a channel that carries the signal to its desired destination, and a receiver that reproduces the message from the received optical signal. It presents up to date results on communication systems, along with the explanations of their relevance, from leading researchers in this field.

This book is intended for courses at least at Masters level to provide an introduction to the field of signal processing in telecommunications. The text therefore deals mainly with source coding, channel coding, modulation and demodulation. Adaptive channel equalisation, the signal processing aspects of adaptive antennas as well as multi-user detectors for CDMA are also included. Shorter sections on link budget, synchronising and cryptography are also included. Network aspects are not discussed and very little is given about wave propagation.

A bit (binary digit) is the smallest unit of information • N = 2n where N is the number of representations and n is the number of bits (ex. ASCII, Unicode, PCM code etc.) • Data communications transfer information using codes that are transmitted as signals (either analog or digital) • In general, analog lines provide a slow service that contains high error rates.

Soon after Samuel Morse’s telegraphing device led to a deployed electrical telecommunications system in 1843, waiting lines began to form by those wanting to use the system. At this writing queueing is still a significant factor designing and operating communications services, whether they are provided over the Internet or by other means, such as circuit switched networks.

What is telecommunications? This word is derived from the Greek word, "tele", which means, "far off"; and the Latin word, "communicate", which means, "to share". Hence Telecommunication is distance communication. The true nature of telecommunications is the passing of information to one or more others in any form that may be used.

Exercise 1. Read the following passage then answer the questions. ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL NETWORKS Digital technology in the telephone network is nothing new. Take all the relays in older exchanges as an example. Relays are either "off" or "on", and there is no state in between these. Suitable combinations of relays could build up and "remember" numbers - perhaps a far-fetched example, but in was digital, so it will serve! What is new is the transfer of speech digitally. In other words, the sound we make when we speak is converted to digits and sent out on to the network....
