We present two approaches for syntactic and semantic transfer based on LFG f-structures and compare the results with existing co-description and restriction operator based approaches, focusing on aspects of ambiguity preserving transfer, complex cases of syntactic structural mismatches as well as on modularity and reusability. The two transfer approaches are interfaced with an existing, implemented transfer component (Verbmobi1), by translating f-structures into a term language, and by interfacing fstructure representations with an existing semantic based transfer approach, respectively. ...

This paper describes a structure-sharing method for the representation of complex phrase types in a parser for PATR-[I, a unification-based g r a m m a r formalism. In parsers for unification-based grammar formalisms, complex phrase types are derived by incremental refinement of rite phrase types defined in grammar rules and lexical entries. In a naive implementation, a new phrase type is built by copying older ones and then combining the copies according to the constraints stated in a grammar rule. ...

The approach is designed to achieve good, i.e. accurate and flexible, indexing by identifying index term sources in the meaning representations built by a powerful general purpose analyser, and providing a range of text expressions constituting semantic and syntactic variants for each term concept. Indexing is seen as a legitimate form of shallow text processing, but one requiring serious semantically based language processing, particularly to obtain well-founded complex terms, which is the main objective of the project described. ...

We present the results from a series of experiments aimed at uncovering the discourse structure of man-machine communication in natural language (Wizard of Oz experiments). The results suggest the existence of different classes of dialogue situations, requiring computational discourse representations of various complexity. Important factors seem to be the number of different permissible tasks in the system and to what extent the system takes initiative in the dialogue.

Turkish is an agglutinative language with complex morphological structures, therefore using only word forms is not enough for many computational tasks. In this paper we analyze the effect of morphology in a Named Entity Recognition system for Turkish. We start with the standard word-level representation and incrementally explore the effect of capturing syntactic and contextual properties of tokens. Furthermore, we also explore a new representation in which roots and morphological features are represented as separate tokens instead of representing only words as tokens. ...

The aim of this research is to provide a principled account of the generation of embedded constructions (called parentheticals) and to implement the results in a natural language generation system. Parenthetical constructions are frequently used in texts written in a good writing style and have an important role in text understanding.

XML provides a way to represent data that have nested structure, and furthermore allows a great deal of flexibility in structuring of data, which is important for certain kinds of nontraditional data. Chapter 23 covers the XML standard for data representation, which is seeing increasing use in the exchange and storage of complex data. The chapter also describes query languages for XML.

The need for detailed description and modeling of cells drives the continuous generation of large and diverse datasets. Unfortunately, there exists no systematic and comprehensive way to organize these datasets and their information. CELDA (Cell: Expression, Localization, Development, Anatomy) is a novel ontology for the association of primary experimental data and derived knowledge to various types of cells of organisms.

Creating institutions to meet the challenge of sustainability is arguably the most important task confronting society; it is also dauntingly complex. Ecological, economic, and social elements all play a role, but despite ongoing efforts, researchers have yet to succeed in integrating the various disciplines in a way that gives adequate representation to the insights of each.Panarchy, a term devised to describe evolving hierarchical systems with multiple interrelated elements, offers an important new framework for understanding and resolving this dilemma.

A method of shape generation using shape grammars which take shape as primi tive and have shape specific rules is presented. A formalism for the complete, generative specification of a class of non-representational, geometric paintings or sculptures is defined, which has shape grammars as its primary structural com ponent. Paintings are material representations of two-dimensional shapes gener ated by shape grammars, sculptures of three-dimensional shapes. Implications for aesthetics and design theory in the visual arts are discussed.

The rest of the paper is structured as follows. The next section discusses related work and expands on Sextant’s contributions. In sections 3 through 6, we discuss the basic operation of Sextant, including its area representation, its extraction of constraints from wireless radios and sensors, and its distributed solution techniques for node and event localization. Section 7 describes how the inter- action between node and event localization can be used to refine position estimates. Section 8 describes the network protocol used to obtain and combine position estimates.

Automatic detection of general relations between short texts is a complex task that cannot be carried out only relying on language models and bag-of-words. Therefore, learning methods to exploit syntax and semantics are required. In this paper, we present a new kernel for the representation of shallow semantic information along with a comprehensive study on kernel methods for the exploitation of syntactic/semantic structures for short text pair categorization.

In recent years, machine learning (ML) has been used more and more to solve complex tasks in different disciplines, ranging from Data Mining to Information Retrieval or Natural Language Processing (NLP). These tasks often require the processing of structured input, e.g., the ability to extract salient features from syntactic/semantic structures is critical to many NLP systems. Mapping such structured data into explicit feature vectors for ML algorithms requires large expertise, intuition and deep knowledge about the target linguistic phenomena.

Dependency-based representations of natural language syntax require a fine balance between structural flexibility and computational complexity. In previous work, several constraints have been proposed to identify classes of dependency structures that are wellbalanced in this sense; the best-known but also most restrictive of these is projectivity. Most constraints are formulated on fully specified structures, which makes them hard to integrate into models where structures are composed from lexical information. ...
