The primary objective of the research is to develop a balanced scorecard framework for construction contractors and measu re performance of contractors using that framework. The results of the questionnaire survey carried out and follow-up interviews conducted among 34 senior managers in Melbourne revealed that the above performance measurement framework is appropriate to use in a contracting organisation. The respondents perceive that the process management perspective measurement is more desirable than others.

A retaining wall constructed on expansive soil can be subjected to lateral swelling pressures due to soil swelling, which may cause a significant horizontal deformation and bending of the retaining wall. In Australia, it is generally assumed that the backfill behind a retaining wall is non-expansive material. Therefore lateral swelling pressures induced by expansive soils are ignored in routine design.

This thesis proposes and implements a new and novel solution on simulators and real devices to solve the mobility problem in a VPN. The new solution adds mobility support to existing L2TP/IPsec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol/IP Security) tunnels. The new solution tunnels Layer 2 packets between VPN clients and a VPN server without using Mobile IP, without incurring tunnel-re-establishment at handoff, without losing packets during handoff, achieves better security than current mobility solutions for VPN, and supports fast handoff in IPv4 networks.

In this thesis I apply a cultural studies approach to examine the construction of meanings involving drug use and abuse in Thai television advertisements and dramas. Tensegrity is a structural system constructed of tensile cables and compressive bars. This thesis proposes several general methods for creating tensegrity structures. The author has developed new methods for creating specific tensegrity cells and the corresponding computer code. Furthermore, the author has constructed various physical models to validate the methods. A proposal for an observation tower on top of the Eureka building in Melbourne has also been devised by the author.

This thesis involves construction of input-output models measuring the economic impact of a farming innovation organisation (The Birchip Cropping Group) on the Victorian regional economy of Buloke Shire. The input-output modeling undertaken is of two forms; the first being a simple top-down model, and the second a more sophisticated hybrid model. The top-down model is based on input-output coefficients drawn from the Australian national input-output tables, and is regarded as because these input-output coefficients are not adjusted to take account of local economic factors.
