  • We present polarization- and angle-resolved optical reflection of a fine artificial opal photonic crystal consisting of SiO2 spheres into a face-centered-cubic lattice. The measurement shows the polarization dependence on high-order reflection (energy region a/λ = 1.0 – 1.5). It is shown that the reflection peaks are strongly dependent on s- and p-polarized light illuminating on the sample. The experiment results are analyzed and compared with photonic bands which are obtained according to prediction based on group theory.

  • This result was confirmed via the molecular simulation, in which the functional groups of molecule on various surfaces of α-form crystal were different, so the degree of lattice matching (E) between the α-form substrate surfaces and β-form molecule aggregate was distinguished and ordered as (001) > (011) > (111), meaning that the nucleation of heterogeneous β-form was more facilitated on the (001) and (011) surfaces compared to that on the (111) surface of α-form crystal.

  • With the advent of the atomic force microscope (AFM) came an extremely valuable analytical resource and technique, useful for the qualitative and quantitative surface analysis with sub-nanometer resolution. In addition, samples studied with an AFM do not require any special pretreatments that may alter or damage the sample, and permit a three dimensional investigation of the surface.

  • This book addresses the engineering student and practising engineer. It takes an engineering-oriented look at semiconductors. Semiconductors are at the focal point of vast number of technologists, resulting in great engineering, amazing products and unheard-of capital growth. The work horse here is of course silicon. Explaining how semiconductors like silicon behave, and how they can be manipulated to make microchips that work—this is the goal of our book.

  • Analytical expressions for the Morse potential parameters of diamond crystals have been derived. They contain the energy of sublimation, the compressibility and the lattice constant. Numerical calculations have been carried out for Si and Sn, and the results reflect fundamental properties of this potential. The obtained Morse potential parameters have been used for calculation of the anharmonic correlated effective potentials of these crystals in XAFS theory showing clearly anharmonic effects . ...

  • Lithium fluoride (LiF) thermoluminescent powder doped with Mg, Cu, Na, and Si as activators was prepared. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that doping LiF with different activators makes crystal lattice somewhat expand. The dosimetric properties of the powder were studied. The main dosimetric peak of LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si appeared in the range of 227−247o C and the ratio of the height of the main peak to that of the other small peaks in the LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si is much greater than that in the LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P. ...

  • A series of cobalt doped nickel ferrite with composition of Ni1-XCoXFe2O4 with x ranges from 0.0 to 0.8 (in steps of 0.2) was prepared by using co-precipitation method and subsequently sintered, annealed at 6000C for 3h. The influence of the Co content on the crystal lattice parameter, the stretching vibration and the magnetization of specimens were subsequently studied. XRD and FTIR were used to investigate structure and composition variations of the samples. All samples were found to have a cubic spinel structure. ...

  • Starch defines a semicrystalline polymer made of two different polysaccharide fractions. The A- and B-type crystalline lattices define the distinct structures reported in cereal and tuber starches, respectively. Amylopectin, the major fraction of starch, is thought to be chiefly responsible for this semicrystalline organization while amylose is generally considered as an amorphous polymer with little or no impact on the overall crystalline organization.

  • As science has become more interdisciplinary and impinges ever more heavily on technology, we have been led to the conclusion that there is a great need now for a textbook that emphasizes the physical and chemical origins of the properties of solids while at the same time focusing on the technologically important materials that are being developed and used by scientists and engineers.

  • It was the first time that zeolite NaY with the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 3.8 was synthesized from phlogopite taken in Yen Bai of Vietnam in the presence of organic complex, NaOH and liquid glass. Synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared lattice vibration (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Surface area by BET technique. The obtained results showed that the synthesized samples were well crystallized.

  • In modern usage, the term is used to describe devices capable of performing mechanical work, as in the original steam engine. In most cases the work is produced by exerting a torque or linear force, which is used to operate other machinery which can generate electricity, pump water, or compress gas. In the context of propulsion systems, an air-breathing engine is one that uses atmospheric air to oxidise the fuel carried rather than supplying an independent oxidizer, as in a rocket.
