  • This study adds to the emerging literature examining empirically the link between population size, other demographic factors and pollution. We contribute by using more reliable estimation techniques and examine two air pollutants. By considering sulfur dioxide, we become the first study to explicitly examine the impact of demographic factors on a pollutant other than carbon dioxide at the cross-national level. We also take into account the urbanization rate and the average household size neglected by many prior cross-national econometric studies.

  • In 2005, the baseline country studies pointed to a lack of connection between advocacy for reduction of maternal mortality in national-level planning and the necessary linkage to effective programmatic responses through resource allocation, capacity- building and human-resource development. The 2011 case-studies suggest that this problem persists: despite a closing of the gap between policy and programmes, the limited progress with improving health outcomes has shown the importance of strengthening health systems – particularly for maternal and newborn health.

  • The imagination is questionable (Daily, 1997; Dasgupta, 2000b). In any event, we should be sceptical of a theory which places such enormous burden on an experience not much more than two hundred years old (Fogel, 1994; Johnson, 2000). Extrapolation into the past is a sobering exercise: over the long haul of history (some five thousand years), economic growth even in the currently-rich countries was for most of the time not much above zero.

  • The belief that children will take care of the parents in the old age is eroding in India where the family size has been cut down as a result of the demographic process (Dandelkar, 1996). The situation in the urban areas shows a rejection of older people by the next generation and this is spreading to rural areas (Desai, 1985). In the nuclear family regime, the position of the aged becomes more vulnerable and is treated as a burden to the family (Nayar, 1992). The social negligence of the aged occurs due to cultural, social and economic relations within the...

  • The aimof this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of the impact of total population size and other demographic factors on air pollution emissions and to correct the weaknesses outlined above. We build on the papers by Dietz and Rosa (1997), Shi (2003) and York et al. (2003a, b) and improve on their studies in a number of ways. First, whereas these three studies examine only CO2 and energy use,we extend the analysis to sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, a pollutant with very different properties to CO2 and hence potentially pos- sessing a very different relationship with population.
