  • Magnetic bearing systems have received much attention in the research community for the past decades. Its inherent nonlinearity and open-loop instability present challenges for controller design. This thesis investigates and designs model predictive control (MPC) systems for an experimental Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) laboratory system. A host-target development environment of real-time control system with hardware in the loop (HIL) is used for implementation of the predictive control systems. In this thesis, both continuous and discrete time model predictive controllers are studied.

  • 3D animation software is extensively used to create graphics for special effects sequences in live-action films, in animated feature film production and for the generation of computer games and virtual reality content. It is a commonly held view within the computer graphics community that 3D animation software is ―just another tool‖ for self-expression. This research questions that view by examining the inherent nature of the tool itself. In doing so, some of the philosophical assumptions embedded in the design of the new digital tool are revealed.

  • Karl Lagerfeld's significance, contributions and original fashion designs are generated by several interrelated factors: perceptive use of historical antecedents, artistic background, love of art and design and the influence of artists and selected fashion designers. These factors had profound effects which provided a personal conceptual base for his own label, the House of Chanel, Chloe and the Fendi sisters. His various designs for these disparate labels reflect the complexity of Lagerfeld's character and display the adaptability of his individualistic talents.

  • The main objective of this research is to optimize the design of the Tunnel kiln for efficient fuel usage. To achieve that, the temperature distribution from the simulation needs be matched with the desired Tunnel kiln curve found in industry. This objective can be achieved by CFD simulation where temperature, velocity and emission distributions inside the Tunnel kiln can be obtained. Generated temperature distribution can be matched with the industrial curve and by interpreting the curve, efficient design can be suggested.

  • The design proposed in this thesis aims to reduce the distortion in Class-D Amplifier output at the cost of increased complexity in the implementation. The thesis is focussed on the DSP components of the unique design. State-ofthe-art FPGAs have been used as the implementation platform for these systems due to advantages such as abundant logic resources, ease of programming and re-configurability. The results demonstrate advantages of SWL processing systems in terms of efficient hardware utilization.

  • This thesis proposes and implements a new and novel solution on simulators and real devices to solve the mobility problem in a VPN. The new solution adds mobility support to existing L2TP/IPsec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol/IP Security) tunnels. The new solution tunnels Layer 2 packets between VPN clients and a VPN server without using Mobile IP, without incurring tunnel-re-establishment at handoff, without losing packets during handoff, achieves better security than current mobility solutions for VPN, and supports fast handoff in IPv4 networks.

  • The aim of this research is to employ a sensitivity study for the total thrust of a ducted twin counter-rotating propeller system design for UAV applications using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Two factors were investigated: propeller spacing and difference between blades pitch angle. Using discrete values for both factors, 32 designs were analysed and evaluated. The same approach was also used for an equivalent unducted propeller system to access the influence of the duct.

  • This thesis presents the design of a test asset system capable of testing GNSS receivers for speed accuracy and the Uncertainty of Measurements (UOM) analysis for this system. The test asset system utilises a variety of engineering solutions and is capable of maintaining high accuracy benchmarks in speed measurements. The test asset system has an UOM equal 0.4 km/h for the entire range of speeds used for GNSS speed testing. The system was designed, assembled and tested to ensure the system maintains its integrity and capability to test GNSS receivers for speed measurement.

  • In the last 10 years interest and activity in urban sonic design has expanded. The way we listen to, think about and understand sound determines the way we value, manage and design with it. However practitioners in the area would benefit from detailed forms of site documentation and analysis that go beyond physical sound measurement. This Masters explores the use of the Sonic Identity Model developed by Pascal Amphoux of CRESSON (the Centre for Research on Sonic Space and Urban Environment) in the early stages of urban sonic design.

  • The aim of this thesis is investigate and design a small antenna which can be embedded onto a Polyethylene substrate (used for making roof tiles). The antenna can be used to harvest ambient energy by connecting it to a rectifier. Due to the dimensional constraints of a roof tile as well as the materials used, there are limitations imposed on the antenna size, and thus the radiation efficiency and bandwidth often become a limiting factor in the overall performance of the system.
