2007, i wrote an called “save the pixel—the art of simple web design,” which teaches that simplicity is the key to designing web pages that work. th e book has sold more than 8,000 copies, and my agency scratchmedia has become well known for the clean, spacious design style. aft er i presented on simple web design at ken mccarthy’s system intensive seminar in 2008, i was asked what evidence i could share that proved the eff ectiveness of my approach. i was shocked to realize i had no numbers to prove that simplicity works!...

Conversation in action is a book designed for teachers. The 50 units that make up the book are the result of many years of experience in the area of languages. It tries to solve the problems of many teachers that have difficulties in making pupils speak in English. Others have a hard time in finding topics to speak about, without repeating themselves day after day.

However, engineering freshmen are less interested in what was or what is than they are in what will be. Young men and women exploring engineering as a career are excited about the future—their future—and about the engineering challenges 10 to 20 years from now when they are in the spring and summer of their careers. In the words of the four-time Stanley Cup winner and Hockey Hall of Fame member Wayne Gretzky, I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it’s been.

The book is divided into two parts: Circuit Design and System Design. The first part deals with everything that goes directly inside the main code, while the second deals with units that might be located in a library (for code sharing, reuse, and partitioning).

The first section introduces the basic concepts of number systems, storage of numerical data, and machine arithmetic. Chapters on the Intel math unit architecture, data conversions, and the details of math unit programming establish a framework for developing routines in engineering and scientific code. The second part, entitled Application Development, covers the implementation of a C++ program and flowcharting. A tutorial on Windows programming supplies skills that allow readers to create professional quality programs.

Over the past decade, technical innovation and evolution in computer-centered measurement systems have led to significant performance advances and economies of scale from manufacturing processes to biotechnology laboratories that share multisensor information system common denominators. This book provides a definitive instrumentation circuit and system reference, supported by 46 tables of engineering data, that demonstrates a composite, error-modeled design methodology for implementing defined accuracy, computer integrated measurement systems.

To verify hardware designs by model checking, circuit specifications are commonly expressed in the temporal logic CTL. Automatic conversion of English to CTL requires the definition of an appropriately restricted subset of English. We show how the limited semantic expressibility of CTL can be exploited to derive a hierarchy of subsets. Our strategy avoids potential difficulties with approaches that take existing computational semantic analyses of English as their starting point--such as the need to ensure that all sentences in the subset possess a CTL translation. ...

This paper describes an initial prototype demonstrator of a Companion, designed as a platform for novel approaches to the following: 1) The use of Information Extraction (IE) techniques to extract the content of incoming dialogue utterances after an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) phase, 2) The conversion of the input to Resource Descriptor Format (RDF) to allow the generation of new facts from existing ones, under the control of a Dialogue Manger (DM), that also has access to stored knowledge and to open knowledge accessed in real time from the web, all in RDF form, 3) A DM implemente...

Under the Direct Loan Program, students and families borrow through one lender—the federal government—which also provides repayment services to borrowers. In contrast, students and families can borrow through thousands of FFELP lenders, who may or may not continue to provide repayment services to students and families. FFELP lenders may receive a subsidy, called a special allowance payment, from the federal government to ensure that they receive a guaranteed rate of return on the student loans they make.

Most large text-understanding systems have been designed under the assumption that the input text will be in reasonably "neat" form, e.g., newspaper stories and other edited texts. However, a great deal of natural language texts e.g.~ memos, rough drafts, conversation transcripts~ etc., have features that differ significantly from "neat" texts, posing special problems for readers, such as misspelled words, missing words, poor syntactic constructlon, missing periods, etc.

You learned about the notation used in entity relationship diagrams, important data modeling patterns, guidelines to avoid common modeling errors, and conversion of entity relationship diagrams (ERDs) into relational tables. You applied this knowledge to construct ERDs for small, narrative problems. This chapter extends your database design skills by presenting normalization techniques to remove redundancy in relational tables.

This paper addresses the issue of designing embodied conversational agents that exhibit appropriate posture shifts during dialogues with human users. Previous research has noted the importance of hand gestures, eye gaze and head nods in conversations between embodied agents and humans. We present an analysis of human monologues and dialogues that suggests that postural shifts can be predicted as a function of discourse state in monologues, and discourse and conversation state in dialogues.

In this research, we investigated the burnup characteristics and the conversion of fertile 232Th into fissile 233U in the core of a Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor (SFR). The SFR fuel assemblies were designed for burning 232Th fuel (fuel pin 1) and 233U fuel (fuel pin 2) and include mixed minor actinide compositions. Monte Carlo simulations were performed using Serpent Code1.1.19 to compare with CRAM (Chebyshev Rational Approximation Method) and TTA (Transmutation Trajectory Analysis) method in the burnup calculation mode.

This paper presents the implementation of RGB↔YCbCr color space conversion circuits (IP-cores) necessary for many video designs. These IP-cores offer simplified 3x3 matrix multipliers used to convert three input color samples (RGB or YCbCr) to three output samples (YCbCr or RGB). The optimized structure of IP-cores uses only four multipliers (or XtremeDSP slices) to implement the RGB↔YCbCr transformation by taking advantage of the dependencies between coefficients in the conversion matrix.

BCS class III drugs suffer from a drawback of low permeability even though they have high aqueous solubility. The objective of current work was to screen the suitability of glyceryl monooleate (GMO)/Pluronic F127 cubic phase liquid crystals precursors for permeation enhancement and in turn the bioavailability of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), a BCS class III drug. Spray-drying method was used for preparation of TDF loaded liquid crystal precursors (LCP) consisting of GMO/Pluronic F127 and lactose monohydrate with an ability to in situ transform into stable cubic phases upon hydration.
