  • A compilation of the most important aerosol chemical processes involved in known scientific and technological disciplines, Aerosol Chemical Processes in the Environment serves as a handbook for aerosol chemistry. Aerosol science is interdisciplinary, interfacing with many environmental, biological and technological research fields. Aerosols and aerosol research play an important role in both basic and applied scientific and technological fields. Interdisciplinary cooperation is useful and necessary.

  • Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are the main pollinating agents for numerous plants and fruit trees and, hence, play a key role in agriculture and more generally in the maintenance of ecological biodiversity. Although these social insects are not the targets of all the different agrochemical treatments used in crop protection, they are widely affected by pesticides.

  • The use of pesticides in the United States has increased dramatically during the last several decades. Hundreds of different chemicals have been developed for use in agricultural and non-agricultural settings. Concerns about the potential adverse effects of pesticides on the environment and human health have spurred an enormous amount of research into their environmental behavior and fate. Much of this concern has focused on the potential for contamination of the hydrologic system, including surface waters.

  • Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), unlike conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), provides information on the brain’s chemical environment (rather than neuroanatomical structure) and the data are most commonly presented as line spectra. This capacity for determining brain metabolite concentrations provides the basis for clinical investigation of, and differentiation between, neurological and neurosurgical conditions.

  • Currently there is uncertainty about the degree of difference in nutrient composition between conventionally and organically produced foodstuffs. Organic foodstuffs are those that are produced according to specified standards which, among other things, control the use of chemicals and medicines in crop and animal production, and emphasise protection of the environment. Recently published non-systematic reviews comparing nutrient composition of organically and conventionally produced foods have come to contrasting conclusions.

  • The skin is the largest organ of the body and its main function is to protect the organism against undesirable effects of the environment. The skin is composed of three different layers: epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The epidermis contains the stratum corneum, the uppermost layer of the epidermis, that acts as the barrier function of the skin due to its very high density and its low hydration. The dermis is an extensive vascular network providing skin nutrition, repair, thermal regulation and immune response.

  • Mercury can exist in many different chemical and physical forms in the environment (see Box 2). Those different forms are called “species.” In this document, we will use the general term “mercury” to refer to all forms of the element, while “methylmercury” will be used to distinguish organometallic mercury compounds (essentially those that contain carbon) from inorganic forms of mercury. Pure mercury is known as elemental mercury or metallic mercury.

  • Get an introduction to the goals, processes and operations of business enterprises in the United States. Your focus is on the functions that a company—whether a multinational corporation or a corner grocery store— must manage effectively to be successful. You also study the legal environment in which businesses operate and the importance of business ethics and corporate citizenship. Applied Economics for Business Welcome to the study of microeconomics, including the theory of supply and demand and the use of that theory to explain market functions.

  • Rapid prototyping is now also seen as an integral part of the even larger but not well defined rapid tooling (RT) market. Concept modeling addresses the early stages of the design process, whereas RT concen- trates on production tooling or mold making. Some concept modeling equipment, also called 3D or office printers, are self-contained desktop or benchtop manufacturing units small enough and inexpensive enough to permit prototype fabrication to be done in an office environment.

  • We present an array of force spectroscopy experiments that aim to identify the role of solvent hydrogen bonds in protein folding and chemical reactions at the single-molecule level. In our experiments we control the strength of hydrogen bonds in the solvent environment by substituting water (H2O) with deuterium oxide (D2O). Using a combination of force protocols, we demonstrate that protein unfolding, protein collapse, protein folding and a chemical reaction are affected in different ways by substituting H2O with D2O.

  • Characterizing the nature of heavy metal release reactions, sorption mechanisms, and movement in the soil is the main topic of this book. Because soils are heterogeneous, heavy metals in soils can be involved in a series of complex chemical and biological interactions including oxidation-reduction, precipitation and dissolution, volatilization, and surface and solution phase complexation. The heterogeneous nature of the different soil constituents adds to the complexity of interactions of heavy metal species with the soil environment....

  • A biosensor is a detecting device that combines a transducer with a biologically sensitive and selective component. Biosensors can measure compounds present in the environment, chemical processes, food and human body at low cost if compared with traditional analytical techniques. This book covers a wide range of aspects and issues related to biosensor technology, bringing together researchers from 19 different countries.

  • However, a specific feature of local Thai food markets is the coexistence of different environ- mentally friendly, healthy or hygienic labels. Therefore governmental institutions started differ- ent certification systems for different safe food products (Eischen, Prasertsri, and Sirikeratikul 2006). Safe Food labels were therefore introduced by the Thai Government. They are based on standards that have been agreed upon by both The Ministry of Public Health and The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
