Different types of land use, practices and management can alter biogeochemical cycling of a piece of land by the effect it produces on soil properties. The conversion of forest land to agricultural land and wastelands to forest land use have been in practice from primordial days due to land hunger and reclamation.

Chilli is a very important vegetable crop and has a great demand in the processing industry and export market. Chilli crop is more responsive to fertilizer application. Application of fertilizers in excess not only causes environmental problems but also reduces nutrient use efficiency, increases the cost of production and reduces the benefit-cost ratio.

Crop residues are the plant parts that are left in the field after harvesting. These residues are usually burnt to clear the field as a field preparation for the next crop. Burning residues is the cheapest and common method adapted by farmers. Burning of residues affects the soil health as well as pollute the environment. Due to burning of residue, microbes are killed and making soil unfertile. Besides macro and micro nutrients which are easily volatilized due to burning of residue in the soil.

A field experiment was conducted on a silty clay loam soil (acidic in reaction and medium in available NPK) during Rabi 2018-19 at Palampur to study the influence of nutrient management practices (Inorganic (RDF), Organic, Natural and Integrated) and varieties (‘Him Palam Alsi-2’, ‘Himani’ and ‘Priyam’) on yield, uptake, quality and soil properties in linseed. Results, revealed that among different nutrient management practices, Integrated Nutrient Management being at par with inorganic practice resulted in significantly higher seed, straw, uptake of NPK and oil yield.

India has virtual monopoly in pigeonpea production accounting to 90% of world’s total production but the average productivity is relatively low due to terminal moisture stress and the production is not adequate to meet the demand of increasing population. To meet the said demand pigeon pea productivity has to be increased. There is a need for judicious management of available water and plant nutrients through different fertilizers to increase the productivity and to reduce the production costs of pigeonpea.
