One of the more promising processes for the energetic transformation of waste is the anaerobic digestion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste. An experimental campaign was carried out on three different samples of OFMSW from Waste Separation, one as received and two obtained after mechanical treatment: OFMSW slurry (liquid fraction) and OFMSW Waste. Anaerobic Biogasification Potential and anaerobic digestion tests were carried out, investigating the effects of inoculum and pH. The OFMSW Waste was also examined to evaluate the possibility to dispose of it in a landfill.

Anaerobic digestion is a process by which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic digestion can be used to treat various organic wastes and recover bio-energy in the form of biogas, which consists mainly of CH4 and CO2. A great option for improving yields of anaerobic digestion of solid wastes is the co-digestion of multiple substrates.

Abstract This study was conducted in order to evaluate the probiotic properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from intestinal tract of broilers and Thai indigenous chickens. The major properties, including the gastric juice and bile salts tolerance, starch, protein and lipid digesting capabilities, and the inhibition on certain pathogenic bacteria were investigated. Three-hundred and twenty-two and 226 LAB strains were isolated from ten broilers and eight Thai indigenous chickens, respectively....

All animals digest their food, carry on gas exchange, excrete waste, circulate nutrient and waste products to and from the cells, coordinate their movements, protect themselves, and reproduce and disperse the species. The more complex animals have organ systems to carry out these functions; in simple animals, these functions sometimes are carried out by specialized tissues.

Ruminant animals have evolved a capacious set of stomachs that harbour microorganisms capable of digesting fibrous materials, such as cellulose. This allows ruminants to eat and partly digest plants, such as grass, which have a high fibre content and low nutritional value for simple-stomached animals....

The success of large ruminants in grassland habitats has been attributed to their fibre-handling ability. In particular, their ability to retain plant particles in the capacious reticulorumen (RR) allows sufficient time for digestion by fibrolytic microbes, while ...

Whilst herbivory is widespread in the animal kingdom, no vertebrates and few invertebrates are capable of synthesizing cellulose- or hemicellulose-digesting enzymes. Instead, herbivores have evolved symbiotic associations with microorganisms....

Under natural conditions the compartmentalization of the digestive tract of ruminants is a vital adaptation to the utilization of the biomass they select with grazing or browsing. The evolution of the reticulorumen made it possible to retain fibrous material in the rumen for long periods, and to sustain a microbial....

The characteristic feature of ruminants is the fermentative nature of their digestion. This feature of their digestive system allows them to survive on high-fibre diets (Leng, 1970). The principal products of fermentation of dietary fibre are short-chain fatty acids....

The dynamics of nutrient degradation in the reticulorumen and of nutrient digestion in the intestines are major determinants of the utilization of diet ingredients by ruminants. These dynamics of nutrient digestion should be known and controlled to improve ruminal and total tract digestibility and to optimize production and composition of milk and meat....

Most books on house rabbits are written as a result of the author’s personal experience with a rabbit companion. This book is no exception. I first conceived the idea of writing about disabled buns after my experiences with a rabbit who required constant specialized care. He inspired me to write an article about caring for special-needs rabbits, which appeared online, and I then planned to expand the topic into a book.
