In a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the physiological characteristics and root characteristics associated with drought tolerance of rice varieties including indica rice subspecies, japonica rice subspecies, hybrid male sterility line and temperature sensitivity of wild rice species for comparison with drought-tolerant Indica rice varieties. At the effective tillering, the pot experiment was to drain the water and then dried for 4 days, then watered again.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the widely grown grains in Viet Nam. The local upland maize cultivars play an important role for the life of people living in mountainous regions in the North of Viet Nam. The quality of seed and drought tolerance ability of local upland maize cultivars are good. In this work, we have studied drought tolerance character and dehydrin gene of some local upland maize cultivars.

A total of 200 SSR markers from different Brassica species were used in this study. Out of 200 SSR markers analyzed for polymorphism in two parental Brassica juncea genotypes (RB 50, drought tolerant and Kranti, drought susceptible), 51 were polymorphic. The polymorphic markers were used to screen F2 population. A total of 108 alleles were identified in the RB 50 and Kranti and the parental B. juncea genotypes. The PIC (polymorphic information content) values for various primers ranged from 0.340-0.505 with an average of 0.406.

Lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) is an important winter season grain legume crop, mostly grown on residual soil moisture and is frequently subjected to terminal drought and heat stress, that results in low and variable seed yields. Moreover, delay in sowing even for two weeks causes the reproductive and grain filling phase of this crop to coincide with a period of substantially high temperature resulting in yield losses by reduced seed set, seed weight and accelerated senescence.

The occurrence of drought stress at seed filling stage is known to cause severe yield reduction in soybean especially where the crop is grown in rainfed conditions. Screening of large germplasm lines under natural drought conditions is extremely difficult to execute due to unusual rains. In the present study, about 328 germplasm lines are screened for terminal drought tolerance by spraying 0.2% of potassium iodide (KI) at R5 stage and the tolerant lines were again retested under similar conditions in the subsequent year.

Tamil Nadu is one of the top rice production states in India. Southwest monsoon failure of recent years in Tamil Nadu hits with severe drought, especially in the regions of Ramanathapuram districts. The main objective of present study is to isolate drought tolerant bacteria from phyllosphere of drought tolerant rice varieties cultivated in paramakudi region. Rice phyllosphere constitutes the diversified microbial community.

The results of testing the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center’s (CIMMYT’s) hybrid combinations, developed from hybrid 790 F2:3 lines and 10 parental lines, using two testers (CML451 and CLO2450) under optimal and managed drought conditions in Ninh Thuan, Vietnam, show that the average grain yield of the biparental (BP) groups of heterosis groups A and B is, respectively, 2.58-3.65 tons/ha and 2.56-2.76 tons/ha in drought conditions, and 4.24-5.02 tons/ha and 5.41-5.93 tons/ha in wellwatered conditions, respectively.

An experiment was conducted to screen 200 germplasm accessions of green gram for drought tolerance using augmented design during summer 2015 under drought stress condition. ANOVA revealed high significant differences among germplasm accessions for yield, yield component traits and also for drought tolerance traits.Mean squares attributable to ‘Genotypes vs check entries’ were significant for all the traits except seeds per podand relative water content.

Fifty groundnut genotypes were evaluated in kharif 2014 under rainfed conditions. Data was collected on sixteen yield and drought related traits to assess the phenotypic diversity and to investigate the relationship between pod yield and other drought tolerance related traits in groundnut. Coefficient of variation ranged from 0.72 to 13.33.

Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatases (TPPs), which are encoded by members of the TPP gene family, can improve the drought tolerance of plants. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the dynamic regulation of TPP genes during drought stress remain unclear.

Maize yield potential is rarely maximized in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) due to the devastating effects of drought stress and Striga hermonthica parasitism. This study was conducted to determine the gains in grain yield and associated changes in an early-maturing yellow bi-parental maize population (TZEI 17 x TZEI 11) F3 following genomic selection (GS) for improved grain yield, Striga resistance and drought tolerance.

Intermittent drought stress in rainfed ecosystem significantly limits the production of Ranjit, the most predominant high yielding rice variety of North East India. In order to understand the genetic basis of drought tolerance a mapping population comprising 85 F4 individuals between ‘Ranjit’ and a drought tolerant cultivar, ARC10372 was developed and genotyped with 80 microsatellite markers. 7 possible linkage groups were analysed by changing the LOD values and the recombination frequencies in the Join map 4.0 software package.

One hundred and thirty eight pigeonpea genotypes were analyzed for molecular genetic diversity using 34 SSR markers with putative function for drought tolerance. The study revealed considerable molecular genetic diversity among genotypes. Fifty two alleles were obtained with 34 SSR markers while, 1 to 3 alleles was scored with an average of ~1.6 alleles for each SSR. Three alleles were amplified by markers ASSR1, ASSR93 and ASSR97. Of these, 15 SSR markers were found to be polymorphic which identified 33 alleles among 138 genotypes.

Globally maize is the third most important crop in the world. The main maize crop is generally grown as rainfed and on marginal lands particularly in hilly terrains of the Kashmir valley. It is situated at longitude and latitude of 73.0-76.2E and 32.50-36.0N respectively. By 2050 demand for maize will double in the developing world, and maize is predicted to become the crop with the greatest production globally, and in the developing world by 2025 (Rosegrant et al., 2008).

Drought is the major abiotic stress that results in severe loss of yield to crops. It is estimated that there will be a steep rise in global water consumption in the coming years. On the other hand, it is also estimated that the sources of water will deplete due to rise in temperature and climate change. It is, therefore, critical to find out such genotypes of crops that have the ability to tolerate drought without much loss of yield.

Rice is the most widely consumed staple food in India and a large part of the world's human population, especially in Asia. In this review we discussed about the Morphological and molecular mechanisms for drought tolerance in rice. Rice requires high temperature above 200C but not more than 35 to 400C. The lots of work have been done in this area to find out the cultivars, resistance to drought.
