  • Drugs for the Treatment of Peptic Ulcers cipitated antacid or, phosphate depletion of the body with excessive intake of Al(OH)3. Na+ ions remain in solution even in the presence of HCO3–-rich pancreatic secretions and are subject to absorption, like HCO3–. Because of the uptake of Na+, use of NaHCO3 must be avoided in conditions requiring restriction of NaCl intake, such as hypertension, cardiac failure, and edema. Since food has a buffering effect, antacids are taken between meals (e.g., 1 and 3 h after meals and at bedtime). Nonabsorbable antacids are preferred.

  • Introduction: Alkyl nitrites are highly volatile organic solvents of aliphatic alcohol esters of nitrites [1]. Amyl nitritea, butyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite are the representative alkyl nitrites; their boiling points are 98, 78 and 67 °C, respectively. Amyl nitrite is being widely used as a detoxicant for cyanide poisoning, because alkyl nitrites oxidize hemoglobin in erythrocytes to yield methemogloblin, which is bound with cyanide to inactivate it [1].

  • Introduction: Salicylic acid ( Figure 9.1) is being used as a keratolytic agent for treatment of corns or verrucae; the acid is included in adhesive plasters, ointments and liquid medicines as their ingredient for removing the stratum corneum. Since such products containing salicylic acid are easily obtainable, salicylic acid poisoning (salicylism) cases are relatively many especially for infants not older than 5 years. Its poisoning symptoms were reported to be headache, vertigo, tinnitus, bradyacusia, amblyopia and sweating [1].

  • Introduction: As antiepileptics, phenytoin, mephenytoin, nirvanol and ethotoin are being used for treatments of grand mal and complex partial seizures. A iminostilbene derivative carbamazepine, phenobarbital (one of the barbiturates) and some benzodiazepines are also being well used as antiepileptics ( Figure 5.1). Poisoning cases due to accidental and suicidal ingestion of these antiepileptics were reported [1]. For analysis of antiepileptics, methods using HPLC [2–15], LC/MS [16], GC [17, 18] and GC/MS [19,20] were reported. Among them, HPLC methods are being used most commonly.
