In the present study, we conducted a latent profile analysis to identify three clusters of Teacher Education students based on their reported use of self-regulated learning strategies. The sample comprised 527 undergraduate Teacher Education students (Mean age ¼ 22 years; SD ¼ 2.20) randomly selected from seven universities in Uganda. Data were collected using the modified Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire.

In this paper, we propose a two-phase educational data clustering method using transfer learning and kernel k-means algorithms for the student data clustering task on a small target data set from a target program while a larger source data set from another source program is available.

AIDS is still an incurable disease and is very costly to control. Since the first case of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Nigeria was reported in 1986, the human immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection has attained epidemic proportion. In an attempt to control this rapid spread, certain preventive measures have been developed. In spite of these and the campaigns to control it, the gap between the knowledge and attitudes of youths towards HIV/AIDS needs to be bridged.

Nowadays, knowledge discovered from educational data sets plays an important role in educational decision making support. One kind of such knowledge that enables us to get insights into our students’ characteristics is cluster models generated by a clustering task.

Educational data clustering on the students’ data collected with a program can find several groups of the students sharing the similar characteristics in their behaviors and study performance. For some programs, it is not trivial for us to prepare enough data for the clustering task. Data shortage might then influence the effectiveness of the clustering process and thus, true clusters can not be discovered appropriately.

This book has its conceptual origin from the lecture materials of the training courses taught by one of the authors in the early nineties. It was during this period that in several developing nations, particularly in Africa, even when the signs of widespread hunger and abject poverty were visible, policy makers did not act for want of ‘empirical evidence’. Some policy makers even dismissed the severity of the problem saying that the hunger reports prepared by government officials were not rigorous enough to take them seriously.

Collaborative learning environments are an essential tool for moving from a “factory” to an “active learning” education model. Active learning emphasizes instilling knowledge, rather than just delivering information. Instead of sitting in organized rows while someone lectures to them, students cluster in collaborative groups to foster teamwork as they work on projects and share ideas. Effective furniture for these environments is student-centric, enabling easy and open communication between students and teachers.
