  • Hi-C is currently the most widely used assay to investigate the 3D organization of the genome and to study its role in gene regulation, DNA replication, and disease. However, Hi-C experiments are costly to perform and involve multiple complex experimental steps; thus, accurate methods for measuring the quality and reproducibility of Hi-C data are essential to determine whether the output should be used further in a study.

  • Adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetric determination of aluminum at ng mL −1 levels in salt samples based on the metal complexation with Calcon (1-(2-hydroxynaphthylazo)-2 naphthol-4-sulfonic acid) and the subsequent adsorptive deposition onto a hanging mercury drop electrode was studied. Central composite design was used as a design method. Several chemical and instrumental parameters (pH, ligand concentration, deposition time, deposition potential, and complexing time) were involved in the experimental design.

  • This study deals with the adsorption of two pesticides, carbendazim and flumetsulam, from aqueous solutions onto four homoionic-montmorillonite clays (Ag+, Zn2+, Cu 2+, and H+). Equilibrium adsorption isotherm data were analyzed using Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherms. Linear and nonlinear fitting methods were compared to determine the best-fitting isotherms for the experimental data. Three error analysis methods were used to evaluate the data for each method: the coefficient of determination (R2), sum of squared errors (SSE), and chi-square test (χ2).

  • Stochastic modeling and simulation provide powerful predictive methods for the intrinsic understanding of fundamental mechanisms in complex biochemical networks. Typically, such mathematical models involve networks of coupled jump stochastic processes with a large number of parameters that need to be suitably calibrated against experimental data.

  • Sex steroids were involved during the process of sex differentiation, gametogenesis and sex reversal in fish and the expression of steroidogenic enzyme genes and their related transcription factors are critical for the development of the gonads and the regulation of steroidogenesis. The early stage of steroidogenesis is important for biosynthesis of testosterone and estradiol. In this study, three steroidogenic enzyme genes cyp19a1, 11βhsd (11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) and 3βhsd (3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) expression in various stages of gonad development has been analysed.

  • The experimental determination of mineral matter in coal is a tedious as well as time consuming process, and requires highly skilled analyst to carry out the chemical analysis of coal and ash. On the other hand, determination of moisture and ash is relatively easy using moisture oven and muffle furnace and can be determined anywhere with little care. Most of the methods reported till date for the evaluation of mineral matter in coal involves indirect determination of mineral matter using high temperature ash as one parameter.

  • In conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) based on magnetic resonance data, each voxel is assumed to contain a single component having diffusion properties that can be fully represented by a single tensor. Even though this assumption can be valid in some cases, the general case involves the mixing of components, resulting in significant deviation from the single tensor model. Hence, a strategy that allows the decomposition of data based on a mixture model has the potential of enhancing the diagnostic value of DTI.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Trypanosoma evansi infections on arterial blood gases of experimentally infected rats. Two groups with eight animals each were used; group A (uninfected) and group B (infected). Infected animals were daily monitored through blood smears that showed high parasitemia with 30 trypanosomes per field (1000•) on average, 5 days post-infection (PI). Arterial blood was collected at 5 days PI for blood gas analysis using an automated method based on dry-chemistry.

  • We present a practical co-training method for bootstrapping statistical parsers using a small amount of manually parsed training material and a much larger pool of raw sentences. Experimental results show that unlabelled sentences can be used to improve the performance of statistical parsers. In addition, we consider the problem of bootstrapping parsers when the manually parsed training material is in a different domain to either the raw sentences or the testing material.

  • We present a language model consisting of a collection of costed bidirectional finite state automata associated with the head words of phrases. The model is suitable for incremental application of lexical associations in a dynamic programming search for optimal dependency tree derivations. We also present a model and algorithm for machine translation involving optimal "tiling" of a dependency tree with entries of a costed bilingual lexicon. Experimental results are reported comparing methods for assigning cost functions to these models.

Pinpointing the neural correlates of the emotional facet of aesthetic experience is more difficult, given that its very nature is less clear.

  • Although I’ve identified different kinds of authority, it’s possible for one person to possess several or all of them. However, most of the time, authority is distributed across team leaders. The more complex the distribution of authority is, the more planning effort you’ll need to be effective. In Chapter 16, I’ll cover how to deal with situations where you need more authority than you have. For now, it’s enough to recognize that planning involves these different kinds of power. Common planning deliverables To communicate requirements, someone has to write them down.

  • I have three vivid memories about learning statistics as an undergraduate that all involve misconceptions. Firstly, I remember my lecturer telling me that, after obtaining a result that was not statistically significant, I should conclude that timber harvesting did not have an effect (on what, I cannot remember). While the logic was flawed, I have since realized that it is a misconception shared by many ecologists.

  • In morocco access to antenatal services is limited and many HIV- positive pregnant women are not identified for lack of HIV testing, especially in rural areas. The fear of stigma and discrimination is a major barrier for women to get tested, both at home and in health care settings. Breast-feeding is contraindicated by the Ministry of Health (an outdated recommendation), but formula is provided in only three cities and only 56 percent of the rural population has access to safe drinking water.

  • Reproductive health is a human right, and like all other human rights, it applies to refu- gees, internally displaced persons and others living in humanitarian settings. To realize this right, affected populations must have access to comprehensive reproductive health information and services so they are free to make informed choices about their health and well-being. The provision of comprehensive and high-quality reproductive health services requires a multisectoral integrated approach.

  • The second section of the book involves the regional biogeography of individual taxa. This section begins with a chapter by Alberto Taylor and his colleagues on the biogeography of cycads in Central America. Their natural history and experimental ecological methods integrate the evolutionary context of the cycad lineage with contemporary autecology, and they elucidate biogeographic patterns and conservation priorities, the latter of which are under-appreciated but pressingly important in Central America.

  • Knowledge of thermodynamic data of copolymer solutions is a necessity for industrial and laboratory processes. Furthermore, such data serve as essential tools for understanding the physical behavior of copolymer solutions, for studying intermolecular interactions, and for gaining insights into the molecular nature of mixtures. They also provide the necessary basis for any developments of theoretical thermodynamic models. Scientists and engineers in academic and industrial research need such data and will benefit from a careful collection of existing data.
