FDI location

This study aims to investigate the current FDI inflows in Vietnam and the impacts of the China-US trade dispute to the Vietnam economy as well as its FDI flows. Moreover, the paper also discusses why and how multinational companies choose Vietnam for their investing destinations by making use ownership-location-internalisation paradigm which is developed by Dunning.

The aim of "Doctoral thesis of Philosophy: Attracting foreign direct investment: a critical analysis of Vietnam's performance" is to provide robust evidence-based analysis and explanations to uncover what drives FDI inflows in Vietnam after having had practically no FDI inflow prior to the launch of its economic reform in the mid-1980s.

This study developed the framework of knowledge spillovers at sector level and investigated these spillover effects of research and development (R&D), foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade activities on sectoral innovation by Spatial Regression Models. Besides, the study examined the spillover effects of sectoral innovation and provincial human resources on firms’ TFP with 7,236 enterprises in 38 sectors of Vietnamese manufacturing industries, located in 62 provinces by Cross-Classified Models.

Nghiên cứu trong lĩnh vực này bắt nguồn từ hai hướng đan xen nhau: hướng thứ nhất bắt nguồn từ lý thuyết thương mại và kinh tế học về tổ chức công nghiệp và hướng thứ hai là cách tiếp cận quy trình quốc tế hóa gắn liền với mô hình Uppsala. Tuy nhiên, cả hai cách tiếp cận này đều có những hạn chế và sự thiên lệch lớn. Bài viết sẽ tổng quan hai cách tiếp cận này, phân tích và chỉ ra những hạn chế của mỗi cách tiếp cận, từ đó đưa ra một số gợi mở về hướng nghiên cứu trong tương lai.
