  • Many pavements, which are considered to be structurally sound after the construction of an overlay, prematurely exhibit a cracking pattern similar to that which existed in the underlying pavement. This propagation of an existing crack pattern, from discontinuities in the old pavement, into and through a new overlay is known as reflective cracking. Reflective cracks destroy surface continuity, decrease structural strength, and allow water to enter sublayers. Thus, the problems that weakened the old pavement are extended up into the new overlay.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymers are by no means new to this world. It is only because of our fascination with petrochemical and non-petrochemical products that these wonderful materials exist. In fact, the polymers can be considered and used in the construction and construction repair. The petrochemical polymers are of low cost and are used more that natural materials.

  • Although inelastic scattering of light from molecules, a phenomenon now known as Raman scattering, was observed by C. V. Raman in 1928, the nonlinear phenomenon of stimulated Raman scattering was not demonstrated until 1962. Soon after low-loss silica fibers became available around 1970, Roger Stolen and coworkers used stimulated Raman scattering in such fibers not only for amplification of optical signals but also for constructing fiber-based Raman lasers.

  • More than 200 polymers are used for electrospinning like silk fibroin (Zarkoob et al., 2004; Sukigara et al., 2003; Jin et al., 2004), collagen (Mathews et al., 2002), chitosan (Ohkawa et al., 2004), gelatin (Ma et al., 2005) etc. In the field of tissue engineering electrospinning technique is applied for the preparation of nanofiber scaffold design. The process is very versatile in terms of use of polymers, non-invasive and does not require the use of coagulation chemistry or high temperature for fiber generation.

  • The first piece of hardware that I want to discuss is a network adapter. There are many different names for network adapters, including network cards, Network Interface Cards, NICs. These are all generic terms for the same piece of hardware. A network card’s job is to physically attach a computer to a network, so that the computer can participate in network communications.

These included statistical handbooks—for example, of the League of Nations and the United Nations—official government publications, and databases complied by researchers and international organizations. The HPDD aims to cover public debt at the general government level.

  • As the final touches are added to Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) standards and with next-generation GPON (N-GPON) standards already underway, it should be clear to service providers that additional network upgrades are imminent as demand for bandwidth continues to increase. Today’s fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) architectures, deployed with broadband PON (BPON) technology, are meeting the needs of small business and residential customers, but are they being constructed with easy upgradeability once bandwidth usage demands it?...

  • Deploying fiber to MDUs, such as apartment complexes, condominiums, townhouses, and other multi-family locations, represents a lucrative market for broadband service providers. At the same time, these applications present unique challenges in both greenfield and overbuild scenarios. This paper addresses the key elements of MDU construction practices, including the physical plant from backbone to premise and the architectural decisions required for a successful MDU application. It will also cover additional network considerations for equipment and connectivity techniques....

  • Chance events are commonplace in our daily lives. Every day we face situations where the result is uncertain, and, perhaps without realizing it, we guess about the likelihood of one outcome or another. Fortunately, mastering the concepts of probability can cast new light on situations where randomness and chance appear to rule. In this fully revised second edition of Understanding Probability, the reader can learn about the world of probability in an appealing way.

  • Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks increasingly include Multiple Dwelling Units (MDUs) such as apartments, condominiums and townhouses as part of the network build. Some estimates indicate that MDU structures may account for over one third of the target FTTP subscriber base. These MDU installations require special consideration for fiber cable interconnection to terminal equipment located at the premises. Connecting MDUs into the FTTP network requires an understanding of the wide diversity of structures and conditions found throughout the country.
