Flash flood

Flood are some the most destructive and catastrophic disasters worlwide. Thuan Chau is a district of Son La province in the north mountainous region of Viet Nam. In the current study, the main aim is to assess the flash flood map in Thuan Chau district, Viet Nam using GIS technique and AHP method.

This article has established a flash flood hazard map at a scale of 1/100,000 in Tuyen Quang province. In the map database, districts with a high risk of flash flood were identified, including Na Hang, Chiem Hoa, Ham Yen, and Lam Binh, the average flash flood hazard level included districts: Yen Son, Son Duong; Tuyen Quang city has a low risk of flash floods.

Coastal Odisha is one of the most flood prone areas of India where the paddy crop in the wet season is often devastated by flash floods with an average productivity of only 0.5–0.8 t ha⁻ ¹. The present study showed that farmers preferred to cultivate low yielding traditional land races owing to their better flood tolerance and the unavailability of flood tolerant high yielding varieties (HYVs).

In the early morning of August 3, 2017, the two flash flood events occurred in Kim Noi and Nam Pam watersheds in Mu Cang Chai and Muong La districts, respectively. The analysis of rainfall data and field surveys shows that the severe events related to extreme local rainfall (>100 mm in 6 hours) accompanying with steep topography (>40% slope) and low vegetation cover.
