  • Several species of flies are found commonly in houses. Some of them so closely resemble the true house fly that it requires very careful observation to distinguish them from it. One of these is the biting stable fly[2] (fig. 1). It occurs frequently in houses and differs from the house fly in the important particular that its mouth parts are formed for piercing the skin. This fly is so often mistaken for the house fly that most people think that the house fly can bite.

  • This paper pro -poses two ideas for adapting standard kinematic techniques to situations that do not naturally allow for the constraint of a fixed baseline. The first calls for extracting the information needed to resolve the integer ambiguity from the very data collected while the kinematic survey is in progress. The second idea addresses the use of the antenna exchange technique for mobile platforms where the original locations of the antennas are not likely to remain stationary during the physical exchange.

  • In this paper, physico-chemical and mineralogical properties of fly ash from Pha Lai, Mong Duong and Ninh Binh thermal power stations were studied for ultilization to improve soil properties. Results shows that the properties of fly ash depend on the nature of parent coal, conditions of combustion, type of emission control devices, and storage and handling methods.

  • The study of how biodiversity is spread around the world is known as bio- geography. Mite harvestmen illustrate one of the most common patterns in bio- geography, called vicariance: species become separated from each other when geographical barriers emerge. Those barriers can be formed by oceans, as in the case of the mite harvestmen; they can also be separated by rising mountains, spreading deserts, and shifting rivers. The other major pattern in biogeography, known as dispersal, occurs when species themselves spread away from their place of origin.

  • Our study contributes to a large literature on the cognitive effects of television, most of which identifies the effect of television using cross-sectional variation in children’s viewing intensity. 5 It also contributes to a growing economic literature on the effects of media on children (Dahl and DellaVigna 2006), and on the effects of mass media more generally (see, for example, Djankov et al. [2003]; Gentzkow and Shapiro [2004, 2006]; Stromberg [2004]; Gentzkow [2006]; Olken [2006]; and DellaVigna and Kaplan [2007]). The remainder of the paper is organized as follows.

  • Interactive spoken dialog provides many new challenges for spoken language systems. One of the most critical is the prevalence of speech repairs. This paper presents an algorithm that detects and corrects speech repairs based on finding the repair pattern. The repair pattern is built by finding word matches and word replacements, and identifying fragments and editing terms. Rather than using a set of prebuilt templates, we build the pattern on the fly.

  • Informally, a disposition is a proposition which is preponderantly, but no necessarily always, true. For example, birds can fly is a disposition, as are the propositions Swedes are blond and Spaniards are dark. An idea which underlies the theory described in this paper is that a disposition may be viewed as a proposition with implicit fuzzy quantifiers which are approximations to all and always, e.g., almost all, almost always, most, frequently, etc. For example, birds can fly may be interpreted as the result of supressing the fuzzy quantifier most in the proposition most birds can fly. ...

  • On the 12th of August, 18-- (just three days after my tenth birthday, when I had been given such wonderful presents), I was awakened at seven o'clock in the morning by Karl Ivanitch slapping the wall close to my head with a fly-flap made of sugar paper and a stick. He did this so roughly that he hit the image of my patron saint suspended to the oaken back of my bed, and the dead fly fell down on my curls. I peeped out from under the coverlet, steadied the still shaking image with my hand, flicked the dead fly on to the floor,...

  • In view of the fact that the present paper will doubtless reach many readers who may not, in consequence of the limited edition, have seen the preliminary volume on mortuary customs, it seems expedient to reproduce in great part the prefatory remarks which served as an introduction to that work; for the reasons then urged, for the immediate study of this subject, still exist, and as time flies on become more and more important. The primitive manners and customs of the North American Indians are rapidly passing away under influences of civilization and other disturbing elements.

  • In this paper, we describe a fast algorithm for aligning sentences with their translations in a bilingual corpus. Existing efficient algorithms ignore word identities and only consider sentence length (Brown el al., 1991b; Gale and Church, 1991). Our algorithm constructs a simple statistical word-to-word translation model on the fly during alignment. We find the alignment that maximizes the probability of generating the corpus with this translation model.

  • This paper proposes an OCL-based framework for model transformations. The formal foundation of the framework is the integration of Triple Graph Grammars and the Object Constraint Language (OCL). The OCL-based transformation framework offers an on-the-fly verification of model transformations and means for transformation quality assurance.
