  • Guidelines set out by the Department of Health (2011) call for interventions to increase children’s physical activity levels, starting from birth. Early years children should be given ample opportunities for unrestricted movement (such as crawling and water-based play) to increase their physiological development and encourage bonding with others.   • John H. Vandermeer Ph.D., is a Margaret Davis Collegiate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His work has been in tropical agroecosystem ecology, tropical forest ecology, and theoretical ecology. He is the author of over 150 scientific articles and 9 books. Professor Vandermeer was born in 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. He received his BS in zoology from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana, and his masters in zoology from the University of Kansas.
