  • This paper presents the results of a series of experiments which examine the impact of two information status categories (given and new) and frequency of occurrence on pitch accent realisations. More specifically the experiments explore within-type similarity of pitch accent productions and the effect information status and frequency of occurrence have on these productions. The results indicate a significant influence of both pitch accent type and information status category on the degree of withintype variability, in line with exemplartheoretic expectations. ...

  • In Design of high density transformers for high frequency high power converters, the abovementioned issues of high-frequency transformers are explored, particularly in regards to high-power converter applications. Loss calculations accommodating resonant operating waveform and Litz wire windings are explored. Leakage inductance modeling for large-number-of-stand Litz wire windings is proposed. The optimal design procedure based on the models is developed.

  • This report presents the results of a theoretical analysis of a frequency-hopping, multiple-frequency-shift-keyed, spread-spectrum communication system using a nonprocessing communication satellite transponder. A large number of users are assumed to be hopping pseudo-randomly about the transponder passband in time synchronization and approximate frequency synchronization. The users are assumed to ......

  • We propose a novel method to automatically acquire a term-frequency-based taxonomy from a corpus using an unsupervised method. A term-frequency-based taxonomy is useful for application domains where the frequency with which terms occur on their own and in combination with other terms imposes a natural term hierarchy. We highlight an application for our approach and demonstrate its effectiveness and robustness in extracting knowledge from real-world data.

  • Frequency distribution models tuned to words and other linguistic events can predict the number of distinct types and their frequency distribution in samples of arbitrary sizes. We conduct, for the first time, a rigorous evaluation of these models based on cross-validation and separation of training and test data. Our experiments reveal that the prediction accuracy of the models is marred by serious overfitting problems, due to violations of the random sampling assumption in corpus data. We then propose a simple pre-processing method to alleviate such non-randomness problems. ...

  • The success of a mechanical translation should be measured in terms of the level of depth required by the situation. To determine whether a careful translation is desirable a rough scanning will suffice. The use of cover-words, high frequency words that may be substituted for low frequency words, in the output language is an essential part of this process.

  • Cognitive theories of dialogue hold that entrainment, the automatic alignment between dialogue partners at many levels of linguistic representation, is key to facilitating both production and comprehension in dialogue. In this paper we examine novel types of entrainment in two corpora—Switchboard and the Columbia Games corpus. We examine entrainment in use of high-frequency words (the most common words in the corpus), and its association with dialogue naturalness and flow, as well as with task success. ...

  • In the past years, a number of lexical association measures have been studied to help extract new scientific terminology or general-language collocations. The implicit assumption of this research was that newly designed term measures involving more sophisticated statistical criteria would outperform simple counts of cooccurrence frequencies. We here explicitly test this assumption.

  • We present a language-independent and unsupervised algorithm for the segmentation of words into morphs. The algorithm is based on a new generative probabilistic model, which makes use of relevant prior information on the length and frequency distributions of morphs in a language. Our algorithm is shown to outperform two competing algorithms, when evaluated on data from a language with agglutinative morphology (Finnish), and to perform well also on English data.
