  • This study investigates the mechanism of action of DNA insecticides, a novel preparation against gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) based on the DNA fragments of the antiapoptotic gene of its nuclear polyhedrosis virus. In our experiments gypsy moth showed significant susceptibility to applied DNA insecticides on the basis of BIR and RING domains fragments of LdMNPV IAP-3, whereas common fruit fly and tobacco hornworm did not.

  • Such pesticides are widely used agricultural inputs, and they are esters of the phosphoric acid and the derivates thereof, and they share in common as a pharmacological characteristic, the action of inhibiting enzymes having esteracic activities, and more specifically, the inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase. They are easily hydrolyze and they have a low capacity of remaining in the environment (Palacios and Moreno, 2004), (Chakraborty, 2009), (Ntow et al, 2009). Other pesticides under study are the organochlorated, which are persistent, lypophilic and very steady.

  • Regulators to date have opted for a relatively "non-interventionist" approach to environmental accounting reform. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for instance, through surveys and case studies, has identified weaknesses in private sector environmental accounting and promotes the diffusion of accounting "best practices." This outreach- and communication-based approach may be expanded upon in the future, however. There currently are calls from some environmental advocates for more aggressive regulatory actions in this area, such as mandated environmental accounting.

  • The importance of sustainable management of non-market forest goods and services has increased during the last few years. This is also reflected in a number of policy documents within the EU. The new EU Rural Development Regulation speaks about the “non-productive investments", as investments to enhance the public amenity value of forests. The stakeholder consultation process within the EU Forestry Strategy and the report of the strategy’s implementation identify the issue of creating markets for currently non-market forest goods and services as an emerging issue.

  • The continuity style deliberately sets out to make the camera, camerawork and editing invisible or, at the very least, unobtrusive. The events on screen seem to take place within a world of their own. They look as though they have simply been captured by some kind of unseen observer, who just happened to be watching and recording the action from convenient and suitable positions or angles. This is the key to the continuity style; its ability to tell a story whilst at the same time hiding the storytelling mechanisms themselves. ...

  • The gene encoding the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) has been reported to associate with a range of substance dependence and HRH2 is the gene coding histamine H2 receptor, the site of action for various compounds, e.g. amitriptiline and mianserin, used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Both OPRM1and HRH2 genes contain some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including +118A/G in OPRM1 and +398T/C in HRH2, which were reported to change in protein sequences and result in affecting the therapeutic response. ...

  • Remedial strategies for petroleum UST sites that include a combination of active source zone treatment with enhanced natural attenuation outside the contaminant plume core may consider chemical oxidation technologies. Many chemical oxidation techniques also provide residual dissolved oxygen that is used by aerobic microorganisms to biodegrade contaminants. In addition, these technologies may also oxidize reduced electron acceptors (e.g., nitrogen to nitrate, sulfides to sulfate), which are then used by anaerobic microorganisms to biodegrade contaminants.

  • For retailers, success is easy to measure: it’s the ringing of the cash register. a state solar program’s marketing activities, to be effective, also must lead to an action: an application for a solar program’s financial incentive to purchase and install a solar energy system. While state solar programs are not directly “selling solar installations” to customers, nevertheless, they measure success in the form of megawatts of solar installed. therefore, the state mar- keting approaches and activities must lead the customer to the solar sale.

Features of tools for the analysis of biochemical networks and the design of electric circuits have been combined to develop new software, where Standard Biological Parts (physically stored at the MIT Registry) have a mathematical description, based on mass action or Hill kinetics, and can be assembled into genetic networks in a visual, “drag & drop” fashion.

  • Estrogen receptors and serotonin receptors coexist in cells in a wide variety of tissues, and this critical review of the literature suggests that many of E2's effects may be medi- ated by changes in the actions of serotonin (5HT). Serot- onin is usually considered to be a neurotransmitter, but surprisingly, only 1% of serotonin in the human body is found in the CNS [4].

Even so, the Plan can address some aspects of the enabling environment for working women—such as the ability of women’s organizations to reach a scale and sophistication where they are capable of articulating and advocating policies to promote women’s economic empowerment.
