  • A study was established for determining the effect of nitrogen (urea) fertilizer method and time of application on the growth and yield of grain sorghum varieties.   • Sorghum shoot fly [Atherigona soccata (Rondani)] is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum. It is important to understand the nature of gene action to breed for resistance to the target insect pest. In the present study, a population of 259 sorghum recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from cross 296B (shoot fly susceptible) x IS 18551 (shoot fly resistant) were evaluated in shoot fly screening nursery to study the inheritance of shoot fly resistance. Variances due to RIL genotypes (G), screening environment (E) and G x E interactions were significant for the traits studied.

  • The study was carried out to assess the general combining ability of the parents and specific combining ability of the hybrids, using line x tester mating design. Fifty hybrids (derived from mating two testers with twenty-five lines in L x T design) along with their parents and checks (M35-1, BJV 44 and PKV Kranti) were evaluated during the rabi 2018-19.   • An investigation was carried out to assess nature and magnitude of genetic diversity for grain quality traits and productivity traits in mini core collection of sorghum. Mini core accessions were grouped into 15 clusters, where in cluster III had largest with 21 accessions whereas cluster XIII had minimum with 5 accessions. Plant height contributed maximum divergence with 46.2%. The inter cluster distance D2 value ranged widely with minimum values of (D2 =197.61) and maximum value (D2 =5541.

  • Stability analysis were carried out for grain yield and component traits using one hundred fifty accessions of sorghum during Kharif, 2013, 2014 and 2015 under rainfed condition at ICAR-CAZRI, Regional Research Station, Pali.   • The experiment was conducted under rainfed condition at Agricultural Research Station, Madhira during early rabi 2016 using 40 ICRISAT sorghum genotypes. Estimation of variation, phenotypic and genotypic correlations along with path analysis was calculated for the material under study. High amount of variability was recorded in the material for various traits under study. Plant height showed positive significant association with number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width, ear length, straw weight, 100 seed weight and grain yield per plant.

  • A field experiment entitled “Performance of Sorghum hybrids under different nitrogen levels in rice-fallow conditions of North Coastal A.P.” was conducted at Agricultural College Farm, Naira in sandy loam soil during rabi 2016-17. The treatments comprised of combination of four sorghum hybrids and four nitrogen levels laid out in Split plot design with three replications. Sorghum hybrid CSH 25 and application of 120 kg ha-1 recorded the highest growth parameters as well as leaf area index.

  • Genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and correlation were estimated for charcoal rot component traits, yield and its component traits. High values of PCV and GCV were observed for majority of traits, indicating a greater scope for improvement of these traits. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance over mean was observed for majority of traits, indicating these characters would be more effective for further improvement through simple selection.

  • Heat treatment and irradiation are the two advanced and innovative processing technologies for the inactivation of microorganisms to ensure the safety by extending the shelf life of foods. Irradiation along with the heat treatment proved that synergistic effect in the reduction of bacterial spores.Fungal count during storage gradually decreased up to 60 days and increased again almost to a level of 0th day to 90th day. Irrespective of treatments and storage the least fungal count was observed in pearl millet followed by sorghum and foxtail millet.
