  • Organogenesis and animal adaptation upon loss of body parts are crucial events in regeneration of all traits, and both are uncovered areas in biology. The organogenesis of the mouth and anus during regeneration was studied in Eudrilus eugeniae. It was found that the earthworm regenerates a functional mouth and anus in six days.

  • “Epigenetics” as introduced by ConradWaddington in 1946, is defined as a set of interactions between genes and the surrounding environment, which determines the phenotype or physical traits in an organism, (Murrell et al., 2005;Waddington, 1942). Initial research focused on genomic regions such as heterochromatin and euchromatin based on dense and relatively loose DNA packing, since these were known to contain inactive and active genes respectively, (Yasuhara et al., 2005).

  • Listening to the radio is fairly common among elders although only half do so daily or almost daily and just over one fourth do not listen to the radio at all. Elders who are men, live in Phnom Penh, or are younger are more likely to listen to the radio and to listen to frequently than elders who are women, live in the provinces, or are older. TV watching is somewhat less common than listening to the radio. Two fifths of Cambodian elders indicate they did not watch TV during the last month while only modestly more...

  • Jennifer Peterson was 35 and pregnant when she discovered a lump in her breast. Tests showed she had invasive breast cancer. 21 The cancer and its treatment, separate and apart from the pregnancy, were a threat to her health. A health exception recognizes the added threat to her health posed by pregnancy during the onset and treatment of her cancer, while without such an exception Jennifer would have been forced to continue her dangerous pregnancy.

  • Most individuals were identified by name, sex and date of birth. However, many Aussiedler change names during the first years of stay in Germany complicating simple identification by name. To minimize this problem the name matching procedure was done phonetically. For some individuals, city of residence was used as an additional variable to ensure correct identification. 43 cases were excluded from the analysis because they were already diagnosed in their country of origin.

  • During the last two decades, evidence of increasing trends of several endocrine-related disorders has been strengthened. These disorders often come with lack of uniform diagnosis and/ or even unclear endocrine disruption. The later is mainly due to abnormal classical changes in the blood- released hormone to its targeted organ, abnormal communication between cells within a tissue or organ (paracrine), within the same cell (intracrine) or signals which act on the same cell (autocrine).

  • With this first edition of Migraine and Other Headache Disorders, we celebrate the remarkable progress in the art and science of headache during the last decade. With 32 chapters by 54 leaders in the field, the book provides health care professionals with practical approaches to patient care and reviews the scientific foundations of headache. We emphasize migraine because of its high prevalence, enormous burden, and the increasing availability of effective management strategies. At the same time, we provide broad coverage of all the primary headache disorders.

  • Intracellular pH homeostasis in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger was measured in real time by 31P NMR during perfusion in the NMR tube of fungal biomass immobilized in Ca2+-alginate beads. The fungus maintained constant cytoplasmic pH (pHcyt) and vacuolar pH (pHvac) values of 7.6 and 6.2, respectively, when the extracellular pH (pHex) was varied between 1.5 and 7.0 in the presence of citrate. Intracellular metabolism did not collapse until a DpH over the cytoplasmic membrane of 6.6–6.7 was reached (pHex 0.7–0.8).

  • Hypoxia and hypoxia-related genes are important factors in articular chon-drocytes during cartilage homeostasis and osteoarthritis. We have investi-gated the various apoptotic factors that show significance in synovial fluid obtained from normal and experimental osteoarthritic animal models and have evaluated the effect of hypoxia on articular chondrocyte apoptosis induced by these apoptotic factors.

  • It is clear that with the current rate of progress India is likely to miss the MDG 4 (Goal 4) on child mortality. While the U5MR fell by about 41 per cent between 1990 and 2008, the IMR declined by 34 per cent during the corresponding period. This was mainly due to the fact that the NNMR, which contributes to two thirds of infant deaths, did not fall appreciably. The early neonatal mortality (within a week) which contributes to about 50 per cent of total infant deaths declined by only 27 per cent during the corresponding period.

  • Tissue culture was first devised at the beginning of the twentieth century [Harrison, 1907; Carrel, 1912] (Table 1.1) as a method for studying the behavior of animal cells free of systemic variations that might arise in vivo both during normal homeostasis and under the stress of an experiment. As the name implies, the technique was elaborated first with undisaggregated fragments of tissue, and growth was restricted to the migration of cells from the tissue fragment, with occasional mitoses in the outgrowth.

  • Annane Annals of Intensive Care 2011, 1:7 REVIEW Open Access Corticosteroids for severe sepsis: an evidencebased guide for physicians Djillali Annane Abstract Septic shock is characterized by uncontrolled systemic inflammation that contributes to the progression of organ failures and eventually death. There is now ample evidence that the inability of the host to mount an appropriate hypothalamic-pituitary and adrenal axis response plays a major in overwhelming systemic inflammation during infections.
